Jessica Chastain’s Viral ‘Other Mommy’ Scary Face Moment Has Fans Obsessed Ahead of the Horror Film’s Release
Few actors can switch from award-winning prestige drama to full-blown nightmare fuel as convincingly as Jessica Chastain. The Oscar winner, best known for ‘The Eyes of Tammy Faye’, has been steadily building a second reputation in horror. Now she’s back in the genre with a role that has the internet both terrified and delighted.
The film is ‘Other Mommy’, a supernatural chiller adapted from Josh Malerman’s novel ‘Incidents Around the House’ and directed by Rob Savage, the filmmaker behind ‘Host’ and ‘The Boogeyman’. James Wan produces through Blumhouse-Atomic Monster. It opens in theaters on October 9.
This week, the film’s most unsettling trick got a fresh moment in the spotlight. A fan account shared a 35-second clip captioned “I’M A TRAINED ACTOR,” showing Chastain doing the ‘Other Mommy’ scary face during a talk show appearance. By the time of writing, the video had racked up more than 219,000 views, around 1,800 likes and 177 reposts.

In the clip, Chastain sits in a black turtleneck with her blonde hair in a sleek bob and a bold red lip. The account says she cries while doing the face, though what’s visible in the footage is her looking downward with an amused grin. It’s the kind of moment that makes fans love her even more, since she’s clearly in on the joke.
A separate report says the demonstration took place on ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live’, where she showed the host how to pull off the smile. According to that account, her method involves tightening her body, keeping her teeth hidden and imagining she’s holding something heavy. Kimmel then reportedly tried it for himself.
That explanation lines up with how she has described the process elsewhere. Universal released a behind-the-scenes featurette titled ‘A New Face of Fear’, in which Chastain talks about stepping into the headspace of a figure trying to hold its skin on. The video highlights how much of the dread comes from subtle facial work rather than special effects.
The most famous story about the face comes from a Q&A on the Universal lot, which CinemaBlend attended. Chastain explained that while she was working on the expression, a five-year-old happened to be in the makeup trailer. She made the face, the child screamed, and she and Savage decided they had it.
Chastain has also said she went through a process of thinking about what ‘Other Mommy’ really is and where the character holds tension. The result is a fixed, unblinking smile that has become the film’s calling card. It’s a good example of an actor testing a performance on a perfectly honest audience.

The buzz didn’t start this week. The first trailer for ‘Other Mommy’ went viral in July after reportedly startling audiences who saw it before ‘The Odyssey’. In it, Chastain’s character surprises her daughter with lunch, a kitchen fire breaks out, and she is suddenly revealed as a contorted, spiderlike creature beneath the table.
The trailer’s other big moment is a simple but chilling question: “Can I go inside your heart?” That line, along with the scares, helped the footage draw tens of millions of views and inspired plenty of memes. Many viewers also compared the premise to ‘Coraline’, which also features a sinister alternate mother.
In the story, Chastain plays a dual role. She is both Bela’s real mother and ‘Other Mommy’, a manifestation of a sinister entity that looks just like her. Bela, an 8-year-old girl, is played by Arabella Olivia Clark, with Jay Duplass as her father, ‘Daddo’.
The cast also includes Dichen Lachman, Arian Moayed and Karen Allen. The setup preys on a universal fear: a parent being replaced by something threatening inside what should be the safest place. For Chastain, it’s also a twist on her earlier horror work, since she protected two girls from a monster in ‘Mama’ and now gets to play the monster herself.
Despite the creepy role, Chastain has said she keeps a firm boundary between her work and home life. In a recent profile, she explained that the calmer her everyday life is, the more freedom she has to go wild on screen. She also declined to discuss how motherhood influenced the part.
That balance may explain why the clip works so well. Off camera, she’s clearly having fun. On camera, she’s willing to go to a truly disturbing place.
