Joe Russo Addresses Doctor Doom’s Shocking Resemblance to Tony Stark in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’
Marvel fans have spent nearly 2 years turning one very specific casting decision into the most dissected mystery in the entire franchise, running theories in circles ever since Robert Downey Jr. was announced as the MCU’s next Doctor Doom.
Every panel, trailer, and stray comment from the filmmakers involved has been picked apart for clues, and the speculation has only intensified as release day gets closer. The latest comments from one of the film’s directors have done little to slow that down.
Downey’s casting as Victor von Doom was first revealed at San Diego Comic Con back in July 2024, sending Hall H into an uproar, given his history as the actor who built the modern MCU playing Tony Stark for over a decade. Since that announcement, Joe and Anthony Russo, who are directing both ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ and its follow-up ‘Avengers: Secret Wars,’ have repeatedly teased that Doom’s connection to Tony Stark runs deeper than simple stunt casting, without ever confirming exactly how the two characters are linked.
Joe Russo addressed the question once again in comments shared via Soundsphere Magazine, saying plainly that he was not going to give anything away and that it would all make sense once fans actually watch the movies. It is a familiar non-answer from a director who has spent months fielding the same question from nearly every outlet covering the film, but it keeps the mystery firmly intact heading into the movie’s release later this year.
“I’m not going to give away anything. It will all make sense when you watch the movies”
That mystery has already generated a wide range of fan theories, ranging from the idea that Downey’s Doom is simply a variant of Tony Stark pulled from another timeline to a more comic-accurate theory involving Doom physically taking or swapping into Stark’s face. Anthony Russo previously fueled that speculation in comments to The Times, explaining that Tony Stark’s death in ‘Avengers: Endgame’ would directly shape the story of ‘Doomsday,’ while stopping short of clarifying which direction the film ultimately takes.
Adding another layer to the mystery, a recent report from GeekTyrant suggested that ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ may not resolve the Stark and Doom connection at all, with the explanation instead being saved for ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ the following year.
Footage shown at CinemaCon this year reportedly gave attendees their first real listen to Downey’s take on the character, with the actor delivering lines in a distinctly Eastern European accent that bore no resemblance to Tony Stark’s usual cadence, suggesting a deliberate effort to separate the 2 characters vocally even if their appearance remains identical.
Joe Russo has been considerably more direct about how significant the character is to the story overall, previously declaring Victor von Doom the greatest villain in Marvel history, ranking him above even Thanos. That kind of billing has only raised the stakes for how satisfying the eventual explanation needs to be, especially given how much narrative weight the franchise has placed on Downey’s return.
With ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ set to hit theaters on December 18 and ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ following in December 2027, fans still have a considerable wait ahead before getting concrete answers about why Doom wears Tony Stark’s face. Until then, comments like Russo’s latest one seem designed purely to keep the theories running right up until opening night.
