Marvel is planning something unusual with its next big Avengers releases. The studio is linking the past and the future of the MCU in a very direct way, using a re-release of Avengers: Endgame to help set up Avengers: Doomsday.

The information comes from Joe Russo, who is co-directing Doomsday. He spoke about the plan during an event at the Sands Film Festival in St Andrews. According to him, the upcoming return of Endgame to cinemas will not just be for nostalgia or celebration.

Instead, the re-release will include new scenes that connect directly to the story of Doomsday. These added moments are meant to build a link between the two films and guide audiences toward what comes next in the Marvel story.

“It’s critically important to re-release the movie, and, in fact, we’ll be re-releasing the film with footage that is set in the Doomsday story that we have added to ‘Avengers: Endgame,’” Russo said. “It’s an opportunity to create a bridge from Endgame to Doomsday in a very unique way… You don’t always get the chance to re-release because it costs money… it’s a really unique opportunity.”

He also explained that the re-release is not just a bonus for fans. It is being treated as part of the story itself. In his words, it works as a direct setup for what viewers will see in Doomsday when it arrives in cinemas.

At the same time, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has been talking about the direction of the next Avengers films. One of the biggest changes is the return of Robert Downey Jr., who will not play Iron Man this time. Instead, he will appear as Victor von Doom.

Feige said the idea came together at a moment when Downey’s career was reaching another high point after his role in Oppenheimer. He explained that the team felt it was the right time to take a bold creative risk with the character.

Anthony Russo also shared thoughts on how the character of Doom is being handled. He said the focus is not just on power or scale, but on the emotional side of the character. Even with huge abilities, there will still be personal weaknesses that shape the story.

This approach shows that Marvel is trying to shift how it connects its films. Instead of treating Endgame as a final chapter, it is now being used as a stepping stone into a new direction for the franchise.

Avengers: Endgame will return to theaters on September 25. Avengers: Doomsday is currently scheduled for release on December 18.

This is a bold move from Marvel. Using a re-release to set up a new movie is not something studios usually do, so it could either feel fresh or a bit forced depending on how it is handled. If the new footage actually adds something meaningful, it might make the connection between the films stronger. What do you think about this idea? Let me know your thoughts in the comments.
