John Hannah Confirms a Fan-Favorite Mummy Character Is Returning for ‘The Mummy 4’
Universal has been slowly reassembling one of the most beloved adventure franchises of the late ’90s and early 2000s, and every new casting reveal has sent fans deeper into nostalgia overload. What started as a simple confirmation that Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz would return has snowballed into a genuine reunion of the original 1999 cast.
That momentum has only grown stronger with each new announcement, from John Hannah reprising his role as the bumbling Jonathan Carnahan to reports that Oded Fehr and Kevin J. O’Connor would return as Ardeth Bay and Beni Gabor. But one name loomed larger than any other in fans’ minds, a villain whose fate seemed sealed after his fiery sacrifice at the end of ‘The Mummy Returns’.
Arnold Vosloo will officially return as Imhotep in ‘The Mummy 4‘, according to John Hannah, who confirmed the news at the Monte-Carlo Television Festival 2026. While Hannah’s comments didn’t spell out exactly how the character factors into the plot, they left no doubt that Vosloo is coming back to reprise the role that defined the franchise’s villainy for two films.
The confirmation arrives shortly after Universal locked in the returns of Oded Fehr as Medjai warrior Ardeth Bay and Kevin J. O’Connor as the treacherous treasure hunter Beni Gabor, both characters who met dramatic ends in the original trilogy. Beni’s apparent death, trapped inside an ancient tomb and devoured by scarab beetles, seemed just as final as Imhotep’s, yet the franchise has always leaned heavily on themes of resurrection to bring characters back from the brink.
That pattern gives Vosloo’s return a certain narrative logic, since Imhotep himself was already resurrected once before in ‘The Mummy Returns’ after dying at the end of the original 1999 film. Fans picked up on that connection almost immediately once O’Connor’s casting became public, with one social media user writing, “So this definitely confirms Imhotep is returning since John Hannah said Kevin and Arnold Vosloo is in talks.” Another fan asked directly whether Patricia Velasquez, who played Imhotep’s doomed love interest Anck-Su-Namun, might be next to rejoin the cast.

The sequel is being directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett of Radio Silence and is set to release in theaters on October 15, 2027, with the film reportedly ignoring the events of 2008’s ‘The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor’ entirely. That creative choice effectively resets the franchise back to the tone and continuity of the beloved original trilogy, which is likely part of why fans have responded so enthusiastically to each returning face.
Beyond the core group of returning stars, the confirmed cast also includes newcomer Michael Johnston alongside franchise veteran John Hannah, with Numan Acar joining as a new addition to the ensemble. Details about the sequel’s plot remain tightly under wraps, though the return of both Imhotep and Beni suggests the film intends to lean fully into the mythology and character dynamics that made the original films so beloved.
With nearly the entire principal cast of the 1999 film now confirmed to return in some form, ‘The Mummy 4’ is shaping up to be one of the most complete legacy sequels in recent memory.
