That surprise arrived courtesy of Johnny Depp, whose presence at San Diego Comic Con had already generated buzz earlier in the day before he made his most unexpected move yet. What started as a street appearance in the Gaslamp Quarter eventually led to something nobody inside Hall H saw coming.

Depp, fully in character as Ebenezer Scrooge, crashed Collider’s Directors on Directing panel in Hall H, a program that had nothing to do with his upcoming film ‘Ebenezer.’ According to Deadline, which was standing close enough to witness the moment firsthand, Depp hobbled onto the stage using a candle before handing it off to director John Francis Daley, who was seated at the end of the panel’s dais.

Once he had the room’s attention, Depp’s Scrooge turned to the crowd and delivered a pointed question in character, asking the audience whether they had no lives or responsibilities. The comment landed as classic Scrooge grumpiness while also doubling as a wink toward just how unexpected his own appearance really was.

That stunt served as the lead-in for something bigger, with Paramount releasing the first official trailer for ‘Ebenezer‘ shortly after Depp’s panel crash concluded. The timing meant Collider’s panel unexpectedly became the launching pad for one of the day’s biggest marketing reveals, a role the program had not been built for at all.

Depp had spent the earlier part of the day building anticipation before this moment even happened. He was spotted walking through the Gaslamp Quarter fully transformed with a top hat, cane, and elaborate gray facial hair, drawing large crowds as he made his way toward the film’s immersive Scrooge and Marley pop-up shop.

During that street appearance, a fan called out to him with “good day to you, Mr. Scrooge,” and Depp stayed committed to the bit, responding with the character’s signature line asking what was so pleasant about it. That level of commitment carried straight through into his Hall H appearance later that evening.

This marks Depp’s first trip back to Comic Con since 2018, when he appeared in Hall H promoting ‘Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes Of Grindelwald’ as the villain Grindelwald. Notably, Depp was not scheduled to appear at any official panels this year, making his decision to crash an unrelated program even more of a genuine surprise for those in attendance.

Collider actually has some history with this kind of stunt, having previously pulled off a surprise reveal in 2022 when Keanu Reeves crashed its panel to debut the first teaser for ‘John Wick, Chapter 4.’ Following that up with Depp’s Scrooge crashing the stage this year gives the panel a growing reputation as an unlikely home for surprise Hollywood cameos.

With the trailer now released and ‘Ebenezer’ set to hit theaters on November 13, this Comic Con appearance has already become one of the more memorable moments of the entire convention. Few stunts managed to generate quite this much organic buzz from crashing a program that had absolutely nothing to do with the film itself.
