Jon Bernthal May Have Alluded That This Star Is Returning to the MCU in ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’

Spider-Man movies have developed a reputation for cast members letting spoilers slip long before release, and it seems the habit has finally caught up with someone other than Tom Holland this time. With ‘Spider-Man Brand New Day’ just weeks away from theaters, one throwaway comment from a returning MCU favorite is now sending fans into a full blown speculation spiral.

That comment came from Jon Bernthal, who returns as Frank Castle in the upcoming film. Both Bernthal and Holland, who also currently share the screen together in ‘The Odyssey’, sat down for an interview where they were asked whether laughing or waking up on cue is tougher for an actor to perform. Bernthal’s answer wound up revealing far more than the question intended.

Bernthal explained that he had just finished an ADR session for a scene involving both Spider-Man and Frank Castle in a hospital, joking that he genuinely fell asleep to nail the take and calling his own wake-up performance “no bueno” even as he insisted the scene itself turned out great. Holland backed him up in the same conversation, saying he had watched the finished movie and thought it was a great take.

That offhand detail was enough to send fans hunting for a bigger connection. The comment suggests Frank Castle winds up injured and hospitalized at some point in the film, waking up to find Peter Parker at his bedside, though it remains unclear exactly how he ends up there. Fans immediately connected the dots to a much bigger rumor that has been circulating for months.

That rumor centers on Rosario Dawson potentially reprising her role as Claire Temple, the nurse turned Night Nurse who tied together Netflix’s Defenders era. According to industry insider Daniel Richtman, Peter Parker’s injuries in the film are severe enough that Bernthal’s Punisher personally carries him to Claire for treatment, a sequence that would echo one of the most iconic images from the Civil War comic storyline of Punisher cradling a wounded Spider-Man while shouting for help.

Not everyone is convinced Bernthal’s comment actually points to Claire, though. One counterargument suggests this could just as easily be a random ER doctor, some workaround Peter found for navigating the American healthcare system without a real identity, or even a Bruce Banner assist rather than a Marvel Netflix cameo. Even so, the broader rumor mill claims ‘Brand New Day’ plans to recreate a specific comic book panel in live action, with Punisher delivering a badly beaten Parker directly to Claire Temple’s door.

Do you think Rosario Dawson will return as Claire Temple in Spider-Man: Brand New Day?

Whether Dawson actually shows up or Bernthal’s comment turns out to be a red herring, the timing lines up with a film already juggling plenty of moving pieces, from Sadie Sink’s still unconfirmed character to a returning Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner. With less than two weeks left before release, every slip like this one is only adding fuel to a rumor mill that shows no signs of slowing down.
