“Jurassic World Rebirth” is charging into theaters with a lot of energy. It’s the seventh film in the franchise and, according to Universal and box office trackers, it had a strong opening day. Even with all the excitement, though, it looks like this new one won’t reach the heights of some of the earlier movies in the series.

The original “Jurassic World” in 2015 had a huge debut and made $208 million in just three days. Then “Fallen Kingdom” followed with $148 million in 2018, and “Dominion” brought in $145 million in 2022, all during regular three-day weekends. “Rebirth,” on the other hand, is expected to make around $133 million, but over a longer five-day holiday period. Of that, about $80 million is likely to come from the normal weekend. So even though the new film is doing well, it’s not quite hitting the same box office levels as its predecessors.

This time, the cast includes Scarlett Johansson, Jonathan Bailey, and Mahershala Ali. They’re all trying to survive in a world filled with dinosaurs once again. Gareth Edwards, known for big action movies like “Rogue One” and “Godzilla,” directed it. The screenplay was written by David Koepp, the same writer who worked on the first “Jurassic Park” back in 1993.

Critics are reacting better to this movie than they did to “Dominion.” A lot of reviews have said it’s got more thrills and actually feels scary again. One review put it simply: “It’s got some serious bite.”

The movie cost around $180 million to make, and Universal spent many millions more on marketing. That’s less than what they spent on “Dominion,” which had a production budget of about $250 million. Because of the smaller budget this time, the film doesn’t need to make as much money to be considered a hit. That might give Universal the confidence to move ahead with another trilogy.

Meanwhile, “Rebirth” isn’t the only big movie playing right now. “F1,” a racing film from Apple Original Films starring Brad Pitt, is also in theaters. That one opened with $57 million and is expected to bring in around $30 to $35 million in its second weekend. It’s aimed more at older viewers, but it’s still competition. That said, Apple isn’t too worried. With a company worth over $3 trillion, a single movie’s box office numbers don’t matter much to them. As one industry insider put it, “Even a T-Rex can’t scare off the iPhone.”

All this information comes from Universal Pictures and various box office analysts tracking current movie trends.
