Kelly McGillis became a household name in the 1980s thanks to her role as Charlotte “Charlie” Blackwood in the hit film Top Gun. Born in Newport Beach, California, McGillis started acting in the late 1970s and quickly gained attention for her talent.

Her breakout role came in 1985 with Witness, where she played an Amish mother and earned nominations for both a Golden Globe and a BAFTA, according to Screen Rant. Her fame grew even more when she starred alongside Tom Cruise in Top Gun the following year.

Over the decades, McGillis has experienced both professional highs and personal challenges. She married Boyd Black, a fellow Juilliard student, in 1979, but the marriage ended in 1981. Later, she married Fred Tillman in 1989, and they had two daughters before divorcing in 2002.

She has spoken openly about her struggles with self-esteem and body image, especially after not being invited back for Top Gun: Maverick. In a 2019 interview with Entertainment Tonight, she said, “I’m old, and I’m fat, and I look age-appropriate for what my age is. And that is not what that whole scene is about. To me, I’d much rather feel absolutely in my skin and who I am at my age as opposed to placing a value on all that other stuff.”

McGillis took a break from acting in the early 2000s after her role in Morgan’s Ferry and returned in 2006 with the B-horror movie Supergator. She also appeared in television, joining the cast of Showtime’s The L Word for its fifth season. In 2007, she appeared in the documentary Girl 27, signaling her return to the screen.

In 2009, McGillis came out as a lesbian. She told the SheWired vlogger that she had been interested in women since she was 12 and that coming to terms with her sexuality had been a long journey. “Being gay was something I struggled with since I was 12, and I previously thought it was a form of divine punishment,” she shared.

Since then, McGillis has remained active both on and off the screen. She teaches acting at the New York Studio for Stage and Screen in Asheville, North Carolina, and has appeared in various projects, including Grand Street, Love Finds You in Sugarcreek, Ohio, Z Nation, and Sisters of Mercy. In 2018, she starred in Maternal Secrets, earning awards and nominations for her performance, and also voiced a character in the animated series Charlie.

Throughout her life, McGillis has embraced aging and body acceptance. In a 2021 interview with It Came From…, she recalled watching herself in an old film and realizing she had once believed she was unattractive. “I really had issues. It was very interesting to me, because I remember making the film, I felt like I was fat and ugly, and I thought, ‘I wonder why I thought that so much back then?’”

Kelly McGillis’s journey shows that her life off-screen has been just as meaningful as her Hollywood career. She has grown into someone who embraces herself fully and uses her platform to support others.
