Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser have finally addressed the behind-the-scenes change involving Dutton Ranch creator Chad Feehan. Following the show’s renewal for Season 2, the Yellowstone stars opened up about Feehan’s exit and explained that changes behind the camera are not unusual in the entertainment industry.

Dutton Ranch arrived as a continuation of the Yellowstone universe, bringing back fan favorites Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler after the original series ended. The new show follows the couple as they try to build a new life in Texas after leaving Montana behind. What began as a fresh start quickly became complicated, but fans have responded strongly to seeing their story continue.

The series has already become a major success for Paramount+. According to reports, Dutton Ranch delivered the biggest debut for the streaming service, proving that interest in Taylor Sheridan’s Western franchise remains strong. However, the show faced controversy before it even premiered when Chad Feehan, who was originally hired as creator and showrunner, was removed from the project.

In a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter following the Season 2 renewal, Reilly and Hauser shared their thoughts on the situation. Both actors also serve as producers on the series, giving them a closer connection to the production process.

Hauser explained that changes in leadership happen often in Hollywood and that productions must adjust when situations change.

“Showrunners change all the time. This business is about adapting. We’ve been doing this for a long time. Things change. People move on,” Hauser said.

Reilly also discussed the experience of making the first season and praised the work that went into bringing the series to life. She explained that the team completed the season with Feehan still involved and that the creative process remained a group effort.

“We finished [Season 1] with Chad beautifully. We finished this season together. It was a really difficult but really satisfying show to make. And so was Yellowstone. So is anything worth making. We’re all creative minds and we all work together and I’m so proud of that. But if we get a Season 2, we don’t make those decisions,” Reilly said.

The actors did not share specific details about why Feehan was removed from the series. Previous reports suggested that Taylor Sheridan, Reilly, Hauser, and executives from 101 Studios and Paramount were not satisfied with certain parts of the production process, leading to the decision.

Feehan has not publicly commented on his departure, and no replacement has been announced for the second season. Since the first season had already finished filming before his exit became public, his creative involvement can still be seen throughout the episodes.

The upcoming second season will be the first time the series moves forward without Feehan’s direct involvement, which has created curiosity among fans. Viewers are interested to see whether the show’s direction changes or if it continues following the same style that made the first season successful.

With the Yellowstone franchise continuing to expand through shows like Dutton Ranch and Marshals, the future remains busy for Taylor Sheridan’s television universe. While a release date for Dutton Ranch Season 2 has not been announced, the strong response to the first season suggests that expectations will be high when Beth and Rip return.
