Kelsey Grammer Reveals Why Beast Means So Much to Him Ahead of ‘Avengers: Doomsday’
‘Avengers: Doomsday‘ has spent the better part of a year assembling one of the largest ensembles in blockbuster history, pulling in names from both the MCU’s current roster and the Fox-era X-Men films that predate Marvel Studios owning the characters outright. Few of those legacy returns have generated quite the same buzz as Kelsey Grammer stepping back into blue fur as Beast.
Grammer first brought Hank McCoy to life in 2006’s ‘X-Men: The Last Stand,’ then made a brief cameo appearance in ‘X-Men: Days of Future Past’ before a fully realized, comic-accurate version of the character showed up in the closing moments of 2023’s ‘The Marvels.’ That stinger scene effectively set the stage for Beast’s eventual arrival in the wider Marvel Cinematic Universe, and ‘Doomsday’ is where that setup finally pays off.
What’s made Grammer’s return stand out isn’t just the nostalgia factor, though. The actor has been unusually candid about how personally the role resonates with him, describing Beast as a man of stature and integrity who lives by the idea that what someone does is who they truly are. He’s drawn a direct comparison between the character and Martin Luther King, framing Beast as a kind of moral center for the mutant community rather than just a super-strong scientist with claws.
Grammer has also spoken about the character’s temperament in a way that goes beyond surface-level fandom, describing Beast as someone slow to act but merciless once he’s fully committed to a fight, giving no quarter and expecting none in return. He’s called playing the role one of the great opportunities of his life and has expressed confidence that fans will come away happy with how the character is handled once ‘Doomsday’ finally reaches theaters.
This isn’t the first time Grammer has reached for the King comparison either. He’s made similar remarks in other interviews over the past year, consistently returning to the idea that Beast carries a kind of dignity and sense of purpose that sets him apart from the rest of the X-Men roster, a throughline that suggests the comparison isn’t just a talking point invented for press rounds but something Grammer has genuinely internalized about the character over nearly two decades of playing him.
Beast isn’t returning alone. Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Alan Cumming, Rebecca Romijn, and James Marsden are all expected to reprise their Fox-era X-Men roles alongside Channing Tatum’s Gambit, marking one of the biggest reunions of that franchise’s original ensemble to date.

They’ll be joining an already massive lineup of MCU regulars, including Chris Hemsworth’s Thor, Anthony Mackie’s Captain America, Sebastian Stan’s Winter Soldier, Florence Pugh’s Yelena Belova, Letitia Wright’s Shuri, and Paul Rudd’s Ant-Man, among many others pulled from across the franchise’s Fantastic Four, Thunderbolts, and Shang-Chi corners. It’s a roster size that rivals, and in some ways exceeds, previous ‘Avengers’ crossover events.
‘Avengers: Doomsday’ is set to hit theaters on December 18, bringing years of setup across both the X-Men legacy films and the current MCU slate to a head in a single crossover event. For longtime fans of the Fox X-Men movies especially, Grammer’s return as Beast represents one of the more emotionally loaded reunions in a cast list already stacked with them.
