Kevin Feige Calls ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Marvel’s Most Ambitious Movie Yet

Marvel’s biggest crossover event since ‘Avengers: Endgame’ is closing in on its release date, and the pressure to deliver has never felt higher. After years of shifting plans, a villain swap, and a sprawling multiverse arc that has tested even the most patient fans, ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ is finally coming into focus.

Kevin Feige has spent much of the promotional run addressing skepticism about the film’s scale, its lack of buildup for its central villain, and whether the Multiverse Saga can stick the landing. Now, ahead of the movie’s theatrical debut, the Marvel Studios president is offering his most direct explanation yet of exactly what kind of story audiences are about to get.

Speaking during Comic-Con press interviews, Feige described ‘Doomsday’ and its follow-up as being built around a very literal idea: universes crashing into each other. He explained that the storyline draws from a famous comic run in which people who previously existed in their own separate cinematic universes are now colliding together into one, calling it possibly the most ambitious and exciting film Marvel Studios has ever made.

That framing matters because it clarifies how ‘Doomsday’ is meant to function within Marvel’s larger plan. Rather than repeating the two-part structure fans remember from ‘Infinity War’ and ‘Endgame,’ Feige has been clear that this new pairing will connect to ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ in a fundamentally different way, even though one film still leads directly into the other.

The movie’s scope backs that up. Marvel’s official synopsis confirms that heroes from three distinct universes are being set on a collision course, bringing together the mainline MCU, the Fantastic Four’s world, and the X-Men in a single, existential threat none of them can face alone.

That kind of convergence explains the flood of casting reveals leading up to production, which reportedly numbered in the dozens of confirmed and rumored characters. The ensemble spans generations of Marvel films, folding in actors from Fox’s X-Men era alongside the current Avengers lineup and the newly introduced Fantastic Four.

At the heart of it all is Robert Downey Jr., returning to the franchise not as Tony Stark but as Doctor Doom, the character now steering the Multiverse Saga toward its conclusion. Feige has previously pushed back on comparisons to Thanos’ slower villain rollout, arguing that audiences are remembering the Mad Titan’s buildup as more extensive than it actually was on screen.

Chris Evans is also confirmed to return as Steve Rogers, joining a roster that includes Chris Hemsworth, Pedro Pascal, Florence Pugh, Vanessa Kirby, and a long list of both franchise veterans and newcomers. Directors Anthony and Joe Russo are back behind the camera as well, marking their first Avengers film since ‘Endgame’ reshaped the entire industry’s expectations for what a superhero crossover could earn.

The stakes extend beyond a single movie. ‘Doomsday’ is designed to set up ‘Secret Wars,’ and industry chatter has floated the idea that Marvel could even split the sequel into two parts depending on how this film performs at the box office.

‘Avengers: Doomsday’ is set to hit theaters on December 18, closing out the first half of Marvel’s two-part finale before ‘Secret Wars’ arrives the following year. Whether Feige’s confidence about the film’s ambition translates into the kind of cultural moment ‘Endgame’ delivered remains the biggest question hanging over Marvel’s ending to this chapter of the MCU.
