New ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Theater Standee Puts Doctor Doom on His Throne at Last

Marvel Studios has spent the past several months slowly building anticipation for ‘Avengers: Doomsday,’ teasing pieces of its villain’s world through convention displays and collectible reveals well ahead of the film’s theatrical release. Directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, the movie brings together heroes from three distinct universes as they face an existential threat unlike anything they’ve encountered before, with the story reportedly drawing on multiple beloved comic arcs for its central conflict.

That marketing rollout has leaned heavily into building up Robert Downey Jr.’s take on Doctor Doom, giving fans piecemeal looks at his Latverian throne room months before the film even hits theaters. Back in July, Marvel Studios built a detailed recreation of that throne room at a Shanghai expo, complete with green stained-glass panels and imagery pulled straight from the film’s marketing, though the display notably left the throne itself empty.

That gap has now been filled. A newly spotted AMC theater standee gives fans their first proper look at Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom actually seated on his throne, marking the character’s live-action debut in that iconic pose. The standee, discovered by a Reddit user at their local theater, prominently features the phrase “12.18.26 is Doomsday” beneath the display, referencing the film’s December 18 release date.

The standee recreates the same grand steps leading up to the throne first seen at the Shanghai expo, with green paneling on either side echoing the film’s teaser poster and the familiar Avengers logo styling. Placing Doom front and center on his throne gives the marketing campaign its most direct look yet at how the villain will physically command the screen once the movie finally arrives.

The throne depicted in the standee marks a notable departure from how the character has traditionally been portrayed on the page. In some comic depictions, Doctor Doom’s throne has appeared as a simple wooden seat with a medieval aesthetic, ornate but relatively understated compared to what’s being built for the film.

By contrast, the cinematic version leans into scale and intimidation, with steps positioned so that Doom sits visibly higher than anyone approaching him. That choice fits the character’s larger role in the story, since ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ is expected to draw inspiration from multiple comic arcs, including elements of the 1984 ‘Secret Wars’ series and Jonathan Hickman and Esad Ribić’s 2015 ‘Secret Wars’ storyline, both of which place Doom at the center of a sprawling, multiversal power struggle.

The theater standee isn’t the only recent look fans have gotten at Doom claiming his seat of power. Hot Toys has separately unveiled a highly detailed 1/6-scale collectible figure depicting Doom in a strikingly similar pose, giving collectors their own lifelike recreation of the character on his throne ahead of the film’s release.

With the throne room now confirmed and increasingly detailed across multiple promotional formats, Marvel Studios appears to be building serious momentum for Doom’s introduction as the MCU’s next major antagonist. Between the Shanghai expo display, the new theater standees, and the Hot Toys reveal, fans have had no shortage of opportunities to study exactly how imposing this version of the villain is shaping up to be ahead of his big-screen debut.

With ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ still months away, expect Marvel Studios to keep the promotional rollout building steadily toward December as more theaters begin installing similar standees nationwide.
