Marvel has spent the better part of two years building toward a finale so big it needed two separate movies to pull off. That kind of ambition comes with an obvious question hanging over everything: how exactly does one lead into the other, and will audiences actually feel that connection once they’re in the theater.

Kevin Feige has been fielding versions of that question throughout the promotional run for ‘Avengers: Doomsday,’ and his answers have started painting a clearer picture of what Marvel’s endgame actually looks like this time around. Unlike the two-part structure fans remember from ‘Infinity War’ and ‘Endgame,’ this new pairing is being built with a different kind of connective tissue in mind.

In a recent conversation, Feige laid out precisely how ‘Doomsday’ feeds directly into ‘Secret Wars,’ describing the storyline as fundamentally about universes colliding into one. He explained that heroes who have spent years existing in their own separate cinematic universes are now converging together, calling the concept possibly the most ambitious project Marvel has ever attempted.

That framing matters because it clarifies why Marvel isn’t simply repeating its old playbook. Rather than splitting one continuous story across two films the way ‘Infinity War’ and ‘Endgame’ did, ‘Doomsday’ and ‘Secret Wars’ are designed to function as connected but distinct chapters, each carrying its own weight while still building toward a shared conclusion.

Feige has also been careful not to overpromise specifics about how that connection plays out on screen. Speaking about the film’s ending, he said he didn’t want to spoil anything, but suggested fans will come away feeling both satisfied and genuinely surprised by where the story heads, adding that the wait for Secret Wars afterward would be a difficult one.

That kind of teaser has become something of a pattern for Feige throughout this promotional cycle. He’s leaned into vague but consistently positive language about the ending, positioning it as a genuine cliffhanger without giving away the specific mechanics of how Marvel plans to bridge the two films.

Part of what makes this transition so significant is the sheer size of what’s converging. ‘Doomsday’ brings together heroes from three distinct cinematic universes, folding the mainline MCU, the Fantastic Four’s world, and the X-Men into a single, existential threat centered on Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom. That convergence alone explains the massive ensemble cast, spanning generations of Marvel history from Chris Evans’ returning Captain America to X-Men veterans making their long-awaited MCU debut.

Feige has also pushed back on comparisons to how Thanos’ villain arc unfolded across earlier Avengers films, arguing that audiences remember that buildup as more extensive than it actually was. That context suggests Marvel is confident Doctor Doom doesn’t need years of dedicated setup to land as a credible threat by the time ‘Doomsday’ arrives.

Looking further ahead, Feige has offered hints about what comes after ‘Secret Wars’ resolves this chapter entirely. He’s described the aftermath as something closer to a reset than a full reboot, suggesting the follow-up universe will feel more streamlined and easier for audiences to follow, while still carrying some familiar elements forward alongside plenty of new territory.

With ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ set to open on December 18 and ‘Secret Wars’ following roughly a year later, Marvel is clearly betting that a slower, more deliberate connection between the two films will pay off differently than the shock-value cliffhanger ‘Infinity War’ delivered back in 2018. Whether that approach lands the way Feige is promising remains the biggest open question hanging over Marvel’s entire Multiverse Saga finale.
