Kevin Feige Just Contradicted Vincent D’Onofrio About Kingpin’s Future in the MCU, and Fans Have Questions

Rights entanglements between Marvel Studios and outside partners have quietly shaped which characters can and can’t appear together on screen for years, often leaving fans to piece together the full picture from scattered interview comments. That guessing game just got a lot more interesting thanks to a new comment from the top of Marvel’s own chain of command.

For months, Vincent D’Onofrio has been fairly blunt about why his fan-favorite villain Wilson Fisk, better known as Kingpin, hasn’t crossed over into a Spider-Man film despite years of fan demand. Speaking on Josh Horowitz’s Happy Sad Confused podcast last year, D’Onofrio explained that ownership issues kept his character confined strictly to television, with no path toward even a brief film cameo currently in sight.

That framing has largely gone unchallenged until now. Appearing on the same podcast as part of his ongoing press tour for ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day,’ Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige pushed back directly on D’Onofrio’s characterization of the situation, saying the rights simply aren’t as complicated as the actor has suggested. Feige acknowledged there are things to navigate, as there are with any character, but added that those conversations have already happened.

That’s a notably different tone than what D’Onofrio has described in multiple interviews over the past year. The actor has repeatedly said Kingpin remains locked out of feature films entirely, telling Horowitz previously that using the character in a movie is a very hard thing to do because of ownership, and that he’s currently only usable for television projects.

D’Onofrio has continued voicing frustration about the situation as recently as this year, publicly urging Marvel and Sony to sort things out so Kingpin could finally face off against Spider-Man on the big screen. He’s described the arrangement as a genuinely complicated rights issue in social media exchanges with fans, reinforcing the same narrative he’s shared consistently in press interviews.

Feige’s comments suggest that narrative may not fully reflect where things actually stand behind the scenes. Given his position overseeing Marvel Studios’ entire slate, including the ongoing relationship with Sony that already allows characters like Daredevil to move between television and film, Feige’s more measured take carries real weight, even if it doesn’t come with a concrete announcement attached.

Kingpin’s complicated status stems from the character’s shared ties to both Spider-Man and Daredevil, two properties that have historically involved separate rights arrangements between Marvel and Sony. That overlap is part of why Charlie Cox’s Daredevil was able to appear in ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ while D’Onofrio’s Fisk has remained confined to Disney+ series like ‘Hawkeye,’ ‘Echo,’ and ‘Daredevil: Born Again.’

Notably, Kingpin will not appear in ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day,’ which arrived in theaters this week and continues Peter Parker’s story following the memory-erasing fallout of ‘No Way Home.’ Whether Feige’s more optimistic framing means a big-screen Kingpin appearance could still be closer than fans think remains an open question.

For now, fans are left parsing two very different accounts from two people who would presumably know the situation best. Whether this discrepancy gets clarified further as press for ‘Brand New Day’ and the upcoming ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ continues remains to be seen, but it’s certainly given the fandom something fresh to speculate about.
