‘King of the Hill’ Revival Finally Explains Why Luanne Is Still Missing
Fans of King of the Hill have been wondering about one major missing piece from the revival: Luanne Platter. After two seasons of the new series, the beloved character has only been mentioned once, leaving many viewers asking why she has not appeared.
The revival brought back many familiar faces from the original animated series, but Luanne and her husband, Lucky, remain absent. The reason is connected to the difficult loss of the actors who brought them to life. Brittany Murphy, who voiced Luanne, passed away in 2009, while Tom Petty, the voice of Lucky, died in 2017.
In an interview with ComicBook, King of the Hill showrunner Saladin Patterson explained that the creative team is still deciding the right way to handle the characters. He said the decision is not something they want to rush because of how important Murphy and Petty were to the roles.
“The honest answer is we are still figuring that out ourselves in terms of what’s gonna be the most satisfying way to do it, but also not being short sighted,” Patterson told ComicBook.
The revival takes place years after the original series and has brought back Hank, Peggy, Bobby, and many other familiar characters. However, the show has been careful when it comes to Luanne and Lucky because bringing them back would likely require new voice actors.
Patterson explained that recasting the roles is a complicated choice because fans connected so strongly with the original performances. “It’s tricky because seeing them means recasting. And that’s just something that we just don’t take lightly, both out of respect to Tom and Brittany,” the showrunner said.
He added that Murphy and Petty were a huge part of what made the characters special, and a new performance might not feel the same for longtime fans. “Tom and Brittany were so much of why we love those characters, and if you’re not gonna be able to recapture that it may not be as satisfying as fans think it would be.”
The revival has already found a way to acknowledge Luanne and Lucky without bringing them back into the current storyline. The Season 15 finale included a flashback explaining why Hank and Peggy moved to Saudi Arabia. During that episode, it was mentioned that Bobby would stay with Luanne, Lucky, and their daughter Gracie while his parents were away.
According to Patterson, that flashback was a meaningful way to include the characters while still respecting the original actors and their impact. “We were satisfied with being able to revisit in flashback at least them being a part of the show,” he explained.
The showrunner also revealed that future flashbacks could be a possibility if the story calls for it. However, the team is still taking time to figure out what feels right for the series and for fans.
Should Luanne return in the ‘King of the Hill’ revival?
For now, there are no confirmed plans for Luanne or Lucky to return in the present-day story of the revival. While some fans may be disappointed, the creative team appears determined to make any decision with care rather than simply bringing the characters back without considering their history.
King of the Hill’s revival is continuing to balance nostalgia with respect for the original series, and Luanne’s possible return remains one of the biggest questions surrounding the show’s future.
