Kristen Stewart Leads Star-Studded Chaos In First Trailer For Dylan Meyer’s ‘The Wrong Girls’
The comedy genre has been missing a certain kind of ridiculous, unpredictable energy lately, but NEON’s upcoming film ‘The Wrong Girls’ looks ready to bring that style back. The new movie promises a strange mix of friendship, bad decisions, experimental drugs, talking cats, and a chain of events that quickly gets out of control.
The film marks the feature directorial debut of Dylan Meyer, who previously co-wrote the Netflix coming-of-age comedy ‘Moxie.’ This time, Meyer is stepping behind the camera for a much more unusual story, following two best friends whose lives completely change after they accidentally become involved with a dangerous experiment.
Kristen Stewart and Alia Shawkat lead the movie as Frankie and Molly, two longtime friends who have spent years avoiding responsibility and enjoying a comfortable life together. Their routine is suddenly interrupted when Frankie receives a mysterious briefcase that was not meant for her.
According to Meyer, the pair are not exactly the type of people who make the smartest choices. “Frankie and Molly are codependent boneheads who have spent the last 10 years blissfully in a fog of weed smoke, co-signing each others’ bad choices and screening adulthood’s increasingly insistent calls,” the filmmaker told Entertainment Weekly.
The briefcase contains glowing experimental psychedelic drugs, and after taking them, Frankie and Molly discover they have developed unusual abilities, including telepathy. Their strange new connection even extends to their cats, who become part of the chaos surrounding them.
Of course, their accidental discovery comes with serious consequences. The two women soon find themselves targeted by a group of Danish villains who want their experimental creation back. What starts as a simple mistake quickly turns into a bizarre adventure involving criminals, scientists, and a fight for survival.
Stewart has already teased the movie’s unusual tone, describing it as a comedy that fully embraces its ridiculous side. “It’s a stoner girl comedy, and it’s really f—ing stupid,” Stewart said. “I think you’ll like it.”
The film also features a packed supporting cast filled with familiar faces. LaKeith Stanfield plays NotMetalHeadDave, a character connected to the mysterious briefcase, while Zack Fox appears as Molly’s boyfriend Josh. Tony Hale joins the cast as a real estate developer, and Kate McKinnon plays Dr. Olsen, the scientist behind the experimental drugs.
Adding even more star power, Geena Davis appears as Dr. Olsen’s partner, while Seth Rogen and Kumail Nanjiani provide the voices of Frankie and Molly’s talking cats. The unusual lineup suggests that ‘The Wrong Girls’ is aiming for a completely over-the-top comedy experience.
The movie also represents a major step for Meyer as a filmmaker. After working as a screenwriter, she is now creating a world that blends absurd humor with a story about friendship and growing up. While the film may focus on chaos and comedy, its central relationship between Frankie and Molly appears to be the emotional heart of the story.
Are you excited for Kristen Stewart and Alia Shawkat’s chaotic stoner comedy ‘The Wrong Girls’?
NEON’s decision to bring the movie to theaters also highlights a growing interest in original, character-driven comedies that are not built around existing franchises. ‘The Wrong Girls’ is not trying to set up a cinematic universe or follow a familiar formula. Instead, it appears to be focused on delivering a strange and memorable ride.
‘The Wrong Girls’ arrives in theaters on August 14 through NEON. With its unusual premise, stacked cast, and commitment to being completely weird, the film could become one of the more unexpected comedy releases of the year.
