‘Lanterns’ Just Made HBO Max History, and DC Fans Have Every Reason to Celebrate
DC Studios needed a win, and it needed one badly. After ‘Supergirl’ delivered a disappointing summer at the box office, James Gunn and Peter Safran’s rebooted DC Universe was staring down real questions about whether its momentum had stalled before it even got going.
‘Lanterns‘ arrived with the weight of that uncertainty riding on its shoulders. Pitched as a grounded, earthbound mystery pairing Kyle Chandler’s veteran Hal Jordan with Aaron Pierre’s rookie John Stewart, the show inherited HBO’s coveted Sunday night timeslot, the same real estate ‘House of the Dragon’ had just vacated, giving it enormous pressure to perform right out of the gate.
That pressure appears to have paid off in a major way. ‘Lanterns’ has officially landed among the top five series launches in HBO Max history, both domestically and globally, making it the highest-performing comic book show the platform has ever released.
The numbers back up the buzz. According to figures from HBO and HBO Max, the series pulled in 9.3 million viewers worldwide within its first three days of release, with 6.6 million of those views coming from the United States alone. That U.S. total outpaced the debuts of several recent HBO heavyweights, including ‘IT: Welcome to Derry,’ ‘The Penguin,’ and ‘True Detective: Night Country.’
Context makes this achievement even more significant. ‘IT: Welcome to Derry’ opened with 5.7 million U.S. viewers before eventually climbing to a 27.1 million global average, while ‘The Penguin’ and ‘True Detective: Night Country’ settled at 19.8 million and 17.5 million global viewers respectively after their runs. If ‘Lanterns’ follows a similar trajectory, its strong start suggests real room for growth as the season continues.
‘Lanterns’ also comfortably beat out HBO’s own ‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms,’ which drew 6.7 million U.S. viewers over its first three days back in January, placing the Green Lantern series among the network’s strongest launches across any genre, not just within the superhero space. For a DC Studios show specifically, that makes ‘Lanterns’ the biggest series premiere the studio has ever had on HBO Max, surpassing prior efforts like ‘The Penguin,’ ‘Peacemaker,’ and the animated series ‘Creature Commandos.’
The show’s staying power has held up too. In the weeks following its debut, ‘Lanterns’ has remained a fixture near the top of HBO Max’s daily charts, with Episode 3 reportedly pushing global viewership past 10 million, setting a new series high and reinforcing that the premiere wasn’t just a one-week curiosity spike.

Much of that success comes down to the show’s unconventional approach to the material. Rather than leaning into cosmic spectacle, ‘Lanterns’ trades space battles for a slow-burn procedural tone, following Hal and John as they investigate a murder in the American heartland that gradually reveals a much larger mystery. Showrunner Chris Mundy, working alongside co-creators Damon Lindelof and Tom King, built the series around atmosphere and character work rather than franchise-scale action, a gamble that appears to be resonating with audiences.
With the eight-episode first season continuing its weekly rollout, the show’s early performance gives DC Studios a genuine reason for optimism after a rocky stretch at the box office. If ‘Lanterns’ can sustain this momentum through its remaining episodes, it could end up defining how the studio approaches prestige television moving forward, proving that a patient, character-driven mystery can compete with the biggest names on the platform.
For a franchise that needed a statement, ‘Lanterns’ just delivered one in a big way.
