Every kid who ever smashed two toy lines together on the living room floor has asked the same question: what happens when Darth Vader meets the Avengers? Lego has been quietly circling that idea for months, and the Lego Marvel and ‘Star Wars’ crossover set is now officially becoming a reality.

The twist is that the company isn’t designing it alone. It is handing the bricks to the fans.

Lego Ideas is the brand’s fan-submission platform, and it normally turns away entries based on licenses Lego already holds, including both ‘Star Wars’ and Marvel. That makes a sanctioned crossover challenge an unusual exception, and a milestone for the community.

The timing is no accident, either. ‘Star Wars’ celebrates its 50th anniversary next year, and ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ is on the horizon, giving Lego a perfect double moment to cash in on the mashup energy.

At New York Comic Con on Saturday, Lego announced a first-of-its-kind Lego Ideas challenge called ‘Hope Assembles’. Builders are invited to combine the worlds of Marvel and ‘Star Wars’ for a chance to have their creations turned into an official Lego set.

Filmmaker, actor and Marvel Comics writer Kevin Smith made the announcement. He said the challenge reflects the same spirit of creativity as the ‘Star Wars/Marvel: Hope Assembles’ comic series he is working on, which launches in January as the first official crossover between the two comic universes.

The promotional art shows what fans might be dreaming up. Darth Vader, Thanos, Doctor Doom, Ultron and Venom, who wields a glowing red lightsaber, are lined up beside stormtroopers, with the Death Star and TIE fighters looming behind them.

Fans can submit original builds across three categories: vehicles, characters and scenes. The ‘Star Wars’ content Lego wants builders to focus on comes from ‘A New Hope’, the 1977 original, and builds are limited to 3,000 bricks.

Submissions are open until November 12, and the community vote follows on December 8. Winners will be announced in early 2027, and the top designs could be made into actual Lego sets.

There are guardrails, of course. The rules are basically to keep it family friendly, which still leaves plenty of room for wild concepts, like Doctor Doom lounging on the Emperor’s throne in the Death Star.

The announcement follows a summer of rumors. In August, a leaked 75481 Iron Falcon set surfaced branded ‘Star Wars x Marvel 2027’, complete with mashup minifigures like Spider-Han and Hulkbacca.

That leak came around the same time Marvel Comics and Lucasfilm Publishing announced the comic series from Smith and artist David Marquez. The series has since grown from five issues to six, according to news from the New York Comic Con panel.

Lego’s involvement now makes the crossover official in the toy aisle as well as on the comic shop shelf. Together, it points toward a full ‘Star Wars’ and Marvel year across comics and bricks in 2027.

Part of the appeal is the sheer novelty. Lego Ideas has worked with ‘Star Wars’ before, including the Republic Gunship vote in 2020, but this is the first time one of its challenges mixes two of the biggest franchises in pop culture.

It also flips the usual script. Instead of a corporate committee deciding which characters collide, the mashup comes from builders who know exactly which fantasy matchups they want to see.

For collectors, the stakes are real. A winning design could become a permanent part of the Lego catalog, which is a rare shot at fame for a hobbyist builder working from a spare-bricks bin.

Which Marvel and Star Wars LEGO crossover would you most like to see?
