Lin Shaye’s Fiery Letter to Sony Saved ‘Insidious: Out of the Further’ from Being Cancelled, and Now It’s Paying off Big Time

The ‘Insidious‘ franchise has spent 16 years quietly becoming one of horror’s most dependable moneymakers, built on modest budgets and audiences who show up like clockwork whenever a new haunted house or possessed soul hits theaters. That reliability nearly didn’t extend to a sixth installment at all.

Sony had a sixth ‘Insidious’ film in development as far back as 2024, but a behind-the-scenes regime change at the studio led to the project being pulled from its release slate entirely. For franchise star Lin Shaye, who has played psychic medium Elise Rainier throughout the series, the cancellation wasn’t something she was willing to accept quietly.

Shaye’s response to the news was blunt. “Fuck this,” she recalled thinking, before deciding to take matters into her own hands and personally write a letter to Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group chairman and CEO Tom Rothman, whom she’d first met decades earlier while filming 1998’s ‘There’s Something About Mary.’

She pleaded directly with Rothman to reverse the decision, arguing that the franchise’s fans deserved another chapter in the story. “It gives me chills because I don’t consider myself a mover and a shaker,” Shaye told Variety, adding that while she doesn’t feel she single-handedly got the movie made, she felt strongly that speaking up matters.

Rothman listened. The project was put back into development, ultimately becoming ‘Insidious: Out of the Further,’ directed by Jacob Chase and released in theaters on August 21. The film shifts focus away from the Lambert family that anchored earlier entries, instead following Gemma Hall, a young mother who discovers she can travel into the dimension known as the Further and bring its demons back into the real world.

That gamble has paid off in a big way. The film posted a $60,300,000 global opening weekend, making it the biggest worldwide debut of any release in August 2026, according to Deadline’s box office reporting.

Domestically, ‘Out of the Further’ opened to $25,300,000, landing as the third-largest opening weekend in the franchise’s history, trailing only ‘Insidious: The Red Door’ and 2013’s ‘Insidious: Chapter 2.’ Made on a lean $18,000,000 budget, the film has already comfortably turned a profit for Sony, Screen Gems, and Blumhouse.

The opening weekend also pushed the franchise’s lifetime worldwide total past $800,000,000 across all six films, a remarkable milestone for a series built almost entirely on cost-efficient horror rather than blockbuster spectacle. That success arrived even without franchise mainstays Patrick Wilson and Rose Byrne, who sat this installment out entirely.

Shaye, now 82 years old, has been adamant that this won’t be her last outing as Elise Rainier, previously shutting down retirement rumors on social media by insisting the franchise is “just getting started.” Given how strongly ‘Out of the Further’ has performed both domestically and internationally, with 23 markets setting new franchise opening records according to Deadline, it seems increasingly likely audiences will get their wish for more.

For an actress who spent decades in an industry where she often felt overlooked, Shaye’s willingness to fight for this film speaks to exactly the kind of persistence that’s kept the ‘Insidious’ franchise alive for over a decade and a half.
