Lizzo recently opened up about her personal life in a way fans haven’t heard before. On the March 31 episode of the Friends Keep Secrets podcast with Benny Blanco, Lil Dicky, and Kristin Batalucco, the 37-year-old singer revealed that she had a late start in her romantic life.

The Grammy-winning artist, whose real name is Melissa Jefferson, shared that she kept her virginity well into her adult years. She explained that she made a promise to herself early on: “I promised myself when I was younger that I wouldn’t have sex until I won a Grammy.”

When asked by the hosts if she would have eventually broken the pledge, Lizzo explained that her first Grammy win came in early 2020, and while it didn’t happen on the night of the ceremony, it was shortly after that she finally followed through with her promise. She admitted that revealing this truth now feels like a relief, saying, “I feel a weight off of my chest right now.”

Reflecting on her youth, Lizzo said she often lied about her experience to fit in with friends and avoid teasing. She laughed about one incident, recalling, “I remember it was so embarrassing. I said, ‘I love the D.’ I said that. And it held me over for a little while.”

Her first kiss didn’t happen until she was 21, and she described it as disappointing. Growing up with a religious background and making a childhood church pledge to remain abstinent until marriage contributed to her late start. She even shared a memory of a New Year’s Eve kiss that went wrong, joking, “My first kiss is ruined.”

Now, Lizzo is in a happy relationship with Myke Wright. The couple has been dating since 2022, though they first met nearly ten years ago while co-hosting for MTV. She has described her relationship with Wright as serious, saying she is “very much in love with Myke” and sees him as her life partner.

Professionally, Lizzo has been busy this year. She released her single Don’t Make Me Love U on March 20, accompanied by a reflective music video that explores her younger self. Earlier this year, she also performed a series of intimate jazz shows at the Blue Note in New York and Los Angeles.

Fans can expect more from the artist in the coming months. She is scheduled to perform at the Netflix Is A Joke Festival at the Greek Theatre on May 7 and is putting the finishing touches on her fifth studio album, tentatively titled Love in Real Life, which is expected to release later this year.

Through sharing her personal experiences, Lizzo has shown her fans that even superstars have unusual journeys and that patience and personal promises can shape life in unexpected ways.
