Logan Paul Responds to Backlash After Spending $550K on ‘One Piece’ Purchase
Logan Paul has responded to criticism after spending $550,000 on rare, graded manga from major anime franchises, a move that sparked heavy debate across the anime community.
The controversy started in April 2026 when Paul posted about his purchase online, triggering backlash from fans who felt the hobby was being turned into a status symbol or business move rather than a genuine passion.
The reaction online was immediate and intense, especially from One Piece fans, many of whom questioned his interest in the series. Some critics even came from other creators, including influencer IShowSpeed, who publicly challenged Paul’s knowledge of the series.
At first, Paul leaned into the attention using his WWE-style persona, joking that the anime community had welcomed him. But later, he addressed the situation more directly during an episode of his IMPAULSIVE podcast, where he discussed both the criticism and his position as a collector.
During the podcast, co-host Mike Majlak brought up concerns from fans and even tested Paul with questions about One Piece, highlighting the tension between casual collectors and long-time fans of the series. Majlak also pointed out fears within the community that high-profile purchases could lead to market manipulation or scalping-like behavior, similar to issues seen in other fandoms.
Paul responded by pushing back on the backlash, saying it was being taken too seriously. He said, “Please don’t take this personally, One Piece community. I actually like you guys, and God bless you. But if you’re upset that I bought a couple mangas, I just don’t know how much I should be concerning myself with that.”
He also defended his right to collect and engage with the franchise in his own way, arguing that fandoms should not be closed off or controlled by gatekeeping. In his view, enjoying a series can include collecting, watching adaptations, and participating in discussions, even if someone is newer to the material.
At the same time, Paul acknowledged that there is another side to the argument. He recognized that for many fans, One Piece is more than just entertainment and is deeply tied to personal identity and long-term emotional investment.
The situation highlights a growing tension between internet celebrity collectors and established fan communities, especially when high-value purchases enter spaces that are usually driven by long-time passion rather than financial value.
