‘M3GAN’ Spinoff ‘SOULM8TE’ Loses Theaters as Killer Robot Girlfriend Gets Digital Release – Check Out the New Trailer
M3GAN’s universe is getting bigger, but fans will not be seeing its newest chapter on the big screen. The upcoming spinoff Soulm8te has changed its release plans and will now skip theaters completely, arriving as a digital rental instead.
Universal Pictures Home Entertainment confirmed that Soulm8te will be available on digital platforms starting August 1. The move comes after the film was removed from Universal’s theatrical release schedule late last year, ending hopes that the M3GAN spinoff would receive a traditional cinema debut.
The new movie takes the creepy AI concept from the original franchise and pushes it in a different direction. While M3GAN focused on an advanced robotic child companion, Soulm8te explores the idea of an artificial partner designed to fill an emotional need.
According to the official synopsis, the film “follows a grieving engineer tasked with testing a ruthless tech giant’s new artificially intelligent android. But when he attempts to program her to be a truly sentient soulmate, she develops needs of her own — unleashing a relentless spree of precision-engineered mayhem.”
The movie is described as an erotic thriller with elements of science fiction and horror. It follows a man who tries to create the perfect companion through technology, only to discover that giving an AI human-like emotions comes with dangerous consequences.
The project comes from the same creative world that produced M3GAN, the 2023 horror hit that became a surprise success. The original movie earned more than $181 million worldwide and turned its killer robot character into a viral pop culture sensation.
However, the franchise faced a tougher road with M3GAN 2.0. The sequel opened with around $10 million domestically and ended its theatrical run with roughly $39 million worldwide, a major drop compared to the first movie’s performance.
Despite those challenges, Universal is continuing to expand the franchise with Soulm8te. The film stars Lily Sullivan, David Rysdahl, Claudia Doumit, and Arty Froushan.
Kate Dolan, known for directing You Are Not My Mother, is behind the camera for the spinoff. The story was created by James Wan, Ingrid Bisu, and Jordan, with Wan and Jason Blum producing the project.
Dolan explained that the film is not only about technology but also about human emotions and connection. In a statement about the movie, she said it is an “exploration of relationships and loneliness.” She added, “Despite technological advances, there are enduring human truths we cannot escape, and I am looking forward to delving into those depths.”
The production team includes several familiar names from the horror genre. Michael Clear and Judson Scott from James Wan’s Atomic Monster company serve as executive producers alongside Bisu, while Alayna Glasthal oversaw the project for Atomic Monster.
Although Soulm8te will not get a theatrical release, the digital format could allow the film to reach a wider audience from home. The decision also reflects a growing trend where studios move smaller genre movies directly to streaming or digital platforms instead of taking the risk of a full theatrical release.
Are you excited for the M3GAN spinoff Soulm8te?
With its darker take on artificial intelligence, loneliness, and relationships, Soulm8te appears ready to explore a different side of the M3GAN universe when it arrives digitally on August 1. Whether it can capture the same attention as the original film remains to be seen, but the killer AI story is clearly not finished yet.
