Plans to bring the world of Redwall to the screen have officially come to an end at Netflix. According to recent reports from entertainment news sources, the streaming company has stopped working on the animated adaptation after several years of development.

This update closes a chapter that started back in 2021, when Netflix first announced a major deal to adapt all 22 books in the Redwall series. At the time, the plan was big. The company wanted to build a full fantasy universe with films and series that could appeal to viewers of all ages.

Back then, people involved in the deal were very optimistic. Representatives from Penguin Random House spoke about how important the books are to readers. They said the stories had been “etched onto the hearts of millions of readers” and believed they were perfect for a global audience.

But things did not move forward as planned. Reports say there were several changes behind the scenes, especially when it came to creative direction. Patrick McHale, who worked on Over the Garden Wall, was first brought in to write a Redwall movie. He completed a script but later left the project, and after that, progress slowed down.

There was also talk of a separate series focused on Martin the Warrior, one of the key characters in the books. However, that idea never fully developed. Over time, delays added up, and eventually the rights deal expired. Reports now say the rights have gone back to the Redwall Abbey Company.

Fans got a small glimpse of what the project might have looked like last year. Artist Bert Youn shared drawings online that showed scenes from the story, including the discovery of Martin’s tomb. He explained that the images came from a “feature film that never got made,” which added to the disappointment for many readers.

Even though this project has ended, Netflix is still focused on other big adaptations. One of the main ones is a new version of The Chronicles of Narnia, which is being developed by Greta Gerwig. Reports suggest this film could be released in November.

The company is also continuing its work with the Roald Dahl Story Company on animated projects. In addition, they recently released Asterix and Obelix: The Big Fight, which performed well.

For now, there are no new plans announced. Fans who were hoping to see the story on screen will have to wait and see if another studio decides to take on the project in the future.
