‘Man of Tomorrow’ Reportedly Set to Be Darker and More Ambitious Than ‘Superman’ With Big Changes Behind the Scenes

James Gunn’s ‘Superman’ proved to be a genuine turning point for DC Studios last year, successfully relaunching the character for a new era while establishing the tone and rules for the studio’s rebooted shared universe. That success immediately raised the stakes for whatever came next, given how much weight a sequel now carries in shaping the DCU’s long-term direction.

That sequel, ‘Man of Tomorrow,’ has remained largely under wraps since wrapping production last month, with Gunn offering only scattered behind-the-scenes glimpses on social media. Fans eager for concrete details have instead had to rely on a steady trickle of unconfirmed reports to piece together what the film might actually look like.

The latest of those reports suggests the sequel is shaping up to be a considerably bigger swing than its predecessor. According to sources cited by industry outlets, ‘Man of Tomorrow’s’ overall tone is being described as much more mature, dense, and epic than the first film, with insiders comparing its sensibility closer to ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’ than to 2025’s ‘Superman.’

Part of that reported shift appears to stem directly from Gunn’s own response to criticism of the first film. Sources suggest he specifically researched negative feedback surrounding ‘Superman’ during development and adjusted accordingly, with a change in cinematographer cited as one of the fixes aimed at improving the sequel’s overall visual polish.

The film’s central antagonist is also reportedly getting a notably darker makeover. Brainiac’s visual design has been described as genuinely terrifying, built specifically to convey real fear to general audiences rather than simply serving as a comic-accurate cameo appearance.

‘Man of Tomorrow’ will mark the first major crossover event of the DCU, reportedly serving as a connective thread between the Superman, Supergirl, and Lanterns corners of the shared universe. The story follows Kal-El, played by David Corenswet, reluctantly teaming up with Nicholas Hoult’s Lex Luthor to confront the far greater threat posed by the superintelligent alien android Brainiac.

Additional reported details point to a prison fight sequence involving Luthor, with Hoult reportedly appearing shirtless during the scene to showcase the character’s physique. Since none of these specifics have been officially confirmed by DC Studios or Gunn himself, they should be treated with a degree of caution until trailers or official marketing materials eventually arrive.

Gunn wrote and directed the sequel himself, continuing his hands-on involvement following the first film’s success. The project is being produced by Gunn alongside DC Studios co-chief Peter Safran, with Frank Grillo also joining the cast as Rick Flag Sr., adding another notable name to the film’s expanding roster.

‘Man of Tomorrow’ is set to arrive in theaters on July 9, 2027, giving fans a considerable wait before any of these reported details can be officially verified on screen. Given how significant this sequel is positioned to be within the broader DCU, from its role kicking off a larger crossover event to its darker tonal shift, the stakes for getting the follow-up right are considerably higher than they were for the first film.
