Blue Beetle Is Back, and ‘Man of Tomorrow’ Is Bringing Him Home

DC Studios has spent the past few years carefully stitching together a new cinematic universe from a mix of fresh faces and holdovers from the previous DCEU era, and few of those transitions have felt as emotionally loaded as Blue Beetle’s path back into the fold.

Xolo Maridueña first played Jaime Reyes in 2023’s standalone ‘Blue Beetle,’ a film that earned praise for its cultural specificity as DC’s first Latino superhero to headline his own movie, even as the broader franchise around it was being torn down and rebuilt by James Gunn and Peter Safran.

That uncertainty left Maridueña genuinely unsure whether Jaime Reyes had any future at all, a doubt that lingered right up until Gunn personally called to change everything. Daniel Richtman’s post confirming Maridueña’s Blue Beetle will appear in ‘Man of Tomorrow’ lines up with reporting that’s been building since mid July, when Variety first revealed the character’s return to the upcoming Superman sequel.

Maridueña has since opened up about exactly how that call went down, describing a moment that felt almost too surreal to process in real time. Speaking about the experience, Maridueña recalled being in Japan with friends when his phone rang, and recognizing the number as belonging to Gunn himself before stepping away to take it privately.

He described the experience of returning to a role he thought might be finished as deeply humbling, crediting Gunn and the wider DC Studios team for folding him back into the new universe. That sentiment echoed comments he made separately about the uncertainty every actor faces in an industry where nothing is guaranteed, acknowledging that landing this kind of opportunity often comes down to forces well outside his control.

Gunn had actually signaled Blue Beetle’s importance to the new DCU years earlier, telling Michael Rosenbaum’s podcast that Jaime Reyes would be the first true DCU character, with ‘Superman‘ serving as the universe’s proper theatrical launch. That framing gave fans reason to hope Maridueña would eventually resurface, even as the character spent years existing in a strange limbo between the old DCEU and the new continuity Gunn was building from scratch.

‘Man of Tomorrow’ finds David Corenswet’s Superman forced into an uneasy alliance with Nicholas Hoult’s Lex Luthor to confront Lars Eidinger’s Brainiac, a threat significant enough to pull together an unusually large ensemble of DC heroes. Blue Beetle’s inclusion fits into that pattern, joining a cast that’s already expected to include Guy Gardner, John Stewart’s Green Lantern, Supergirl and several other characters pulled from across the DCU’s growing roster.

Given how much Maridueña has publicly championed representing DC’s first Latino superhero lead, his return carries weight well beyond typical franchise fan service. Whether Jaime Reyes gets a meaningful role in the story or a brief but memorable cameo remains unclear, though Maridueña’s own excitement suggests he’s just grateful to still be part of the story at all.

‘Man of Tomorrow’ is scheduled to arrive in theaters next July, giving fans plenty of time to speculate about how large a part Blue Beetle ultimately plays in Gunn’s sprawling DCU ensemble.
