James Gunn has confirmed that filming has officially started on the upcoming Man of Tomorrow, the next chapter in the new DC universe. The update came directly from Gunn, who shared a behind-the-scenes image on social media.

The photo showed a chessboard, an inmate ID linked to Lex Luthor, and a box marked with a Brainiac symbol. Gunn did not explain the scene, but the items strongly suggest a meeting between Superman and Lex Luthor while Luthor is in prison. The idea of the two characters playing chess also connects to moments that have appeared in the comics.

The film is written and directed by Gunn himself. It continues the story that began with the recent Superman, and it once again focuses on David Corenswet as Superman and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor. In this story, the two enemies are forced to work together against a bigger threat.

That threat is Brainiac, who will be played by Lars Eidinger. Brainiac is described as a powerful and highly intelligent alien machine.

The idea of Superman and Lex Luthor teaming up is not new for comic fans. Similar storylines have appeared before, including arcs where Luthor briefly joins forces with bigger threats before turning against them again.

Several cast members from the previous film are also returning. This includes Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, and other members of the Justice Gang. The wider cast also includes Nathan Fillion, Isabela Merced, Frank Grillo, María Gabriela de Faría, and others connected to the DC universe.

The film is produced by Gunn and Peter Safran under DC Studios. It is part of the studio’s new long-term plan for its shared universe.

Production started in April 2026 in multiple locations, including the United States and the United Kingdom. Filming is expected to continue for several months.

The movie is scheduled for release on July 9, 2027, and will be part of the larger “Gods and Monsters” chapter of DC’s new direction.

This setup is interesting because it pushes Superman into an uneasy alliance with his biggest enemy. That kind of story can work well if the tension between the characters stays strong. The Brainiac choice also feels like a solid threat for both of them to face together. The only risk is balancing so many characters in one film.
