‘Mare of Easttown’ Fans Have a Big Reason to Watch ‘Task’ Season 2 as Big Crossover is Coming
Fans of Mare of Easttown have a new reason to be excited about HBO’s Task Season 2. The upcoming season of the detective drama will now include a familiar face, with Julianne Nicholson returning as Lori Ross, the character she played in the Emmy-winning crime series Mare of Easttown.
The news creates a surprise connection between the two shows, which were previously separate projects. Both series come from creator and showrunner Brad Ingelsby and share a similar setting, focusing on working-class communities in the Philadelphia suburbs.
While HBO has confirmed Nicholson’s return as Lori Ross, details about how the character will fit into the new story remain unknown. The studio has not revealed whether her appearance will directly connect Task Season 2 to the events of Mare of Easttown or if it will simply be a familiar character appearing in a different investigation.
HBO’s official description for the new season gives only a small look at what is coming. The synopsis reads: “Tom Brandis (Mark Ruffalo) takes the helm of a new task force, but the deeper the operation runs, the harder it is to tell who’s the target.”
Mark Ruffalo will lead the new season as Tom Brandis, and he will be joined by a growing cast that includes Mahershala Ali, Harry Melling, Adam Nagaitis, Aminah Nieves and Edgar Ramirez.
Nicholson’s return is especially exciting because Lori Ross became one of the most important characters in Mare of Easttown. The series, which premiered on HBO in 2021, starred Kate Winslet as Marianne “Mare” Sheehan, a detective investigating the murder of a young mother while dealing with struggles in her own personal life.

In the show, Nicholson played Lori, Mare’s closest friend. Lori’s family became connected to the main mystery when her son was pulled into the murder investigation. Nicholson’s performance earned widespread praise and helped her win an Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie.
The possible connection between Task and Mare of Easttown also raises questions about whether other characters could appear in the future. Fans have been hoping for a second season of Mare of Easttown, even though the original series was created as a limited series.
Kate Winslet and Brad Ingelsby have both previously talked about the possibility of continuing Mare’s story. In 2024, HBO drama head Francesca Orsi said there were early conversations about bringing the show back. Earlier this year, Winslet also suggested that another season could happen, saying, “I think we probably will do it.”
For now, it remains unclear if Winslet’s Mare Sheehan could ever appear in the world of Task, but Nicholson’s casting has already opened the door for more possibilities.
Beyond her work in Mare of Easttown, Nicholson is known for roles in projects like Hacks, Boardwalk Empire, The Outsider and Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty. She also recently appeared in the series Paradise and Dope Girls.
