Margot Robbie’s career is often linked to big awards moments and huge box office wins. From her early praise in I, Tonya to her powerful role in Bombshell, she has built a reputation for taking on bold parts. More recently, she became a global icon again as the star and producer of Barbie. But not every moment on her way to the top was glamorous.

One scene from The Wolf of Wall Street still stands out to her for the wrong reasons. In the 2013 film directed by Martin Scorsese, Robbie played Naomi Lapaglia, the wife of Leonardo DiCaprio’s character, Jordan Belfort. The movie is known for its wild energy and over-the-top moments, including a scene where the couple is shown lying on piles of money.

What looked flashy on screen was actually painful in real life. In a 2017 interview with The Daily Beast, Robbie explained that the fake money used during filming caused real injuries. She said she ended up with a million paper cuts on my back after lying on the prop cash. The bills were stiff and sharp, nothing like real money.

She also recalled the crew’s reaction when the scene ended. As she stood up to grab her robe, she said people around her were shocked by how her skin looked. You look like you’ve been whipped a million times. Her back was covered in red marks from the edges of the fake bills.

Despite working with a legendary director, Robbie later joked that some movie fantasies should stay fictional. She even offered a blunt takeaway from the experience, advising that if anyone is ever planning on having s*x on top of a pile of cash, don’t.

Today, Robbie is busy with a new wave of projects. She is currently promoting a dark and emotional take on Wuthering Heights, directed by Emerald Fennell. In the film, she plays Catherine Earnshaw opposite Jacob Elordi. The movie is set for a February 13 release and features original music by Charli XCX.

She has also been appearing in the press for the sci-fi romance A Big Bold Beautiful Journey, which stars Colin Farrell and Jodie Turner-Smith. At the same time, Robbie is balancing her work life with being a new mother after welcoming her first child in late 2024.

As a producer through LuckyChap Entertainment, she continues to shape major projects, including a Sims movie and a possible Ocean’s Eleven prequel. Even with a packed schedule, she remains open about the tough moments behind the scenes that helped shape her career.

Do you think Margot Robbie’s new role as Catherine Earnshaw will become her most talked-about performance yet? Share your thoughts in the comments.
