Margot Robbie has once again spoken up about her love for Damien Chazelle’s film Babylon.

The 2022 movie, which starred Robbie alongside Brad Pitt, Diego Calva, Jean Smart, Jovan Adepo, and Li Jun Li, followed Hollywood’s messy shift from silent films to sound in the late 1920s.

Despite its big cast and Chazelle’s direction, the film was a financial disaster when it hit theaters. It cost nearly $80 million to make but only earned around $63 million, losing Paramount a large amount of money. Critics at the time were divided as well, though it later picked up some award nominations and even won for its score and production design.

Now the film is being looked at differently by audiences and critics, and Robbie couldn’t be happier about that.

During a recent Letterboxd video, Robbie joined Colin Farrell in a guessing game where actors had to identify their own movies based on reviews posted on the site. One of the reviews described Babylon as “Excess and chaos for the ones who dream. Hell yes!” Robbie immediately guessed the film correctly, and when asked if she had anything to say to fans, she gave a heartfelt response.

“I always wondered if you people were out there, because when it got slammed at the time, both critically and at the box office, I was confused because I think it’s an amazing movie, and one I’m very, very proud of being in,” Robbie said.

“And I always thought maybe this will be like one of those movies that 20 years later, everyone’s like, ‘Oh my god, Babylon didn’t do well at the time? That’s crazy!’”

She went on to add that she didn’t have to wait that long for people to come around on it. “So if you love Babylon, I love you. And we think alike when it comes to movies because it’s a great film.”

This isn’t the first time Robbie has been vocal about her surprise at the film’s initial reception. Speaking on Turner Classic Movies’ The Plot Thickens podcast last year, she said she still can’t understand why audiences rejected it. “I am still saying that,” Robbie told host Ben Mankiewicz.

“I love it. I don’t get it either. I know I am biased because I am very close to the project and I obviously believe in it, but I still can’t figure out why people hated it. I wonder if in 20 years people are going to be like, ‘Wait, Babylon didn’t do well at the time?’ Like when you hear that Shawshank Redemption was a failure at the time and you’re like, ‘How is that possible?’”

For Robbie, Babylon remains one of her proudest projects, even if it took audiences some time to catch up.
