When The Dark Knight premiered in 2008, it wasn’t just another superhero movie. Christopher Nolan’s film shifted how people saw the genre. Critics finally started taking superhero movies seriously, and the combination of Christian Bale’s brooding Batman and Heath Ledger’s legendary Joker created moments that are still remembered today.

It set a bar so high that the final installment in the trilogy had a lot to live up to. By the time The Dark Knight Rises came out in 2012, expectations were enormous. The film brought in Tom Hardy as Bane and Marion Cotillard as Talia al Ghul, adding new layers to the story.

But not every moment hit perfectly. One scene in particular—the death of Cotillard’s character—stood out in a way that caught fans’ attention. Many viewers felt the scene looked more like a theatrical performance than the gritty, realistic tone of the rest of the movie.

Cotillard eventually addressed the criticism in an interview with French outlet Allociné. She admitted she didn’t fully understand why the editors chose that particular take. “We’re all in the same boat, and if sometimes it gets out of control, then everyone is involved,” she said. “Sometimes failures happen, and you end up thinking ‘Why did they keep that take?’”

The Oscar-winning actress also opened up about how hard it was to have one moment define people’s memory of her performance. “Being identified solely by one awkward scene is hard, but I eventually learned to see the humor in it,” she said.

“It’s important to know how to laugh about this… There are far worse things to worry about in life.” Her honesty highlighted the challenges actors face when working on blockbuster films with millions of eyes on every scene.

Even with that one awkward moment, The Dark Knight Rises was still a massive hit. It earned more than $1 billion worldwide, proving the trilogy was a cultural and financial success. Nolan and Cotillard have both continued to build impressive careers since the film’s release.

Recently, Cotillard returned to television, joining the fourth season of The Morning Show on Apple TV+ as Celine Dumont, a powerful European media heiress. She also starred in the 2025 fantasy film The Ice Tower, directed by Lucile Hadžihalilović, which reunited her with a director she admires greatly. At 47, she continues to take on diverse roles that highlight her range, from high-stakes dramas to international thrillers.

Nolan, on the other hand, is preparing for what could be his most ambitious project yet. His upcoming film, The Odyssey, is set to premiere in July 2026 and tells the story of Odysseus, played by Matt Damon.

The film also stars Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, and Zendaya, showing Nolan’s commitment to large-scale, star-studded projects. Known for his meticulous attention to detail, Nolan has promised that The Odyssey will offer the kind of immersive IMAX experience audiences have come to expect from his work.

While Gotham and Batman are behind them, both Cotillard and Nolan remain highly active in the film world. Cotillard has proven that a single “awkward” take doesn’t define a career, especially when she has an Oscar and several upcoming high-profile projects.
