Mark Wahlberg has spent decades jumping between serious dramas and crowd-pleasing comedies, but when it comes to the movie he loves most, his choice is far from light or fun. The actor recently named his all-time favorite film, and it is a pick that caught many fans off guard.

The reveal comes from the book You Gotta See This, where Wahlberg was asked to choose the one movie that stands above all the rest for him. His answer was quick and simple. He said Taxi Driver. He did not rush to explain himself either.

According to the book, Wahlberg seemed almost unsure the moment the words left his mouth. When the interviewer pushed him to say more, he laughed and brushed it off. He joked that explaining his choice would probably give people way too much insight into what he called his twisted mind. After that, he chose not to go any deeper.

Taxi Driver was released in 1976 and was directed by Martin Scorsese, with a script written by Paul Schrader. The film stars Robert De Niro as Travis Bickle, a lonely Vietnam veteran who works nights as a taxi driver in New York City while slowly losing his grip on reality. The movie is known for its dark mood and unsettling look at isolation and mental health.

The film was praised heavily by critics when it came out. It won the top prize at the Cannes Film Festival and earned four Academy Award nominations. These included acting nods for De Niro and for Jodie Foster, who was only fourteen years old at the time. Even with years of debate over its violence and themes, the movie is still seen as one of the most important films ever made.

Why Wahlberg connects so strongly with it remains his secret. Some fans believe he may relate to the intensity of the main character or the raw honesty of the story. Whatever the reason, Taxi Driver clearly left a deep mark on him.

Outside of his movie preferences, Wahlberg is staying busy. As of this year, he is preparing for the release of The Family Plan 2 on Apple TV+. The sequel sends his character and family on another dangerous trip, this time through Europe, with Kit Harington joining the cast as a new threat.

He is also appearing in the crime thriller Play Dirty, directed by Shane Black, where he plays a seasoned thief. On top of that, Wahlberg is stepping into darker territory again with the historical drama By Any Means. In that film, he plays a mafia hitman who teams up with a young FBI agent, portrayed by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, to investigate murders set in the 1960s.
