Marlon Wayans Reveals His Late Father’s Final Wish Brought the Wayans Brothers Back Together for ‘Scary Movie 6’
Marlon Wayans has shared that the reunion of the Wayans brothers for Scary Movie 6 came from a deeply personal place. The actor and comedian says it was his late father’s final wish that brought the family back together creatively after years of working on separate projects.
In a recent interview with GQ, Marlon Wayans opened up about a conversation he had with his father, Howell Wayans, shortly before he passed away in 2023. That moment, he said, stayed with him and eventually shaped the decision to reunite for the new film.
“My father told me before he passed, ‘You and your brothers should work together again,’” Marlon said. He explained that the request came during a hospital visit, when his father was already very sick. Marlon recalled the emotional moment clearly, saying, “I looked at my dad on that hospital bed and I said, ‘Alright, for you… I promise.’”
He added that honoring that promise became a guiding force for the project. According to him, the idea of bringing the family back together was not just about making another comedy, but about fulfilling something meaningful for their father and their shared history.
Marlon also spoke about how difficult it has been for the brothers to stay creatively connected over the years. Each of them built separate careers in film and television, often working on different schedules and projects. He described it in a light but honest way, saying, “It’s hard for four Black men to stay together. Look at New Edition. And in this case, we’ve got four Bobby Browns.”
Despite those challenges, he said their father remained confident in what they could create together. Howell Wayans believed strongly in their chemistry and what they were capable of as a family. Marlon said his father told him, “You guys make magic together. I think you should do it.” He also recalled the final push from his father: “Do it for me.”
That moment, Marlon said, stayed with him long after his father’s passing. He made a promise in return, saying, “All right — for you.” He added, “My father put his hand out, and I shook it and promised him that I would make this happen. And I did. And I feel complete.”
Scary Movie 6 marks the return of the Wayans family to the franchise that helped define their early 2000s success. The original films became major comedy hits by parodying horror movies and pop culture trends, helping establish the brothers as major voices in the genre.
The new installment is set for release on June 5 and will continue the franchise’s tradition of spoofing well-known films. The cast includes returning stars Anna Faris and Regina Hall, along with Marlon and Shawn Wayans. Other cast members include Damon Wayans Jr., Anthony Anderson, Kai Cenat, and more.
For Marlon Wayans, however, this project is about more than comedy. It is a promise kept, and a way of honoring a final wish that brought his family back together.
