Rebecca Romijn’s version of Mystique has held a special place in comic book movie history since 2000, when the actress spent up to nine hours a day covered in blue body paint and prosthetics to bring the shapeshifting mutant to life.

With almost no dialogue in her earliest appearances, Romijn relied entirely on physicality and presence to make Mystique one of the most memorable figures in Fox’s original X-Men trilogy, a performance that helped define the character long before Jennifer Lawrence later took over the role.

That legacy has made her eventual return to the mutant she originated feel like a genuine event, especially once Marvel confirmed she would rejoin castmates like Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, and James Marsden for ‘Avengers: Doomsday.’ Fans have spent months speculating about how the studio might reinterpret these Fox-era characters now that they finally exist within the same universe as the Avengers.

Marvel shared new imagery this week confirming just how different Romijn’s take on the character will look this time around, showing her comic-accurate design standing in direct contrast to her original Fox appearance. The new costume is a white and blue design featuring a prominent diamond-shaped emblem across the chest, a significant departure from her previous appearances.

Unlike the Fox films, where Mystique’s blue-skinned form was left almost entirely uncovered aside from strategic scale patterns, this new suit covers her neck and chest, suggesting Marvel is aiming for a far more modest, family-friendly presentation this time around. The redesign requires up to seven hours of practical makeup each day for Romijn, a reduction from the nine-hour process she endured during the original X-Men trilogy, since much of her body is now covered by the costume rather than relying entirely on prosthetics and paint.

Romijn has described her experience filming Doomsday as very surreal and extremely fun, largely due to reuniting with her original X-Men castmates while also working alongside the broader MCU ensemble. She has also been balancing the production with concurrent filming on Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, describing the overlapping schedules as a very eventful summer given the frequent travel between sets.

Mystique is far from the only Fox-era mutant receiving a redesign for the crossover. Leaked crew merchandise has also revealed comic-accurate updates for Magneto, Nightcrawler, Namor, and Doctor Doom, with Alan Cumming’s Nightcrawler trading his old leather jacket for a tactical red and black suit featuring his signature V emblem. Footage shown at CinemaCon reportedly included a chaotic battle between Mystique and Yelena Belova, in which Mystique’s shapeshifting powers put two versions of Florence Pugh’s character on screen at once.

What Do You Think of Rebecca Romijn’s New Mystique Look in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’?

Avengers Doomsday brings together James Marsden as Cyclops, Patrick Stewart as Professor X, Ian McKellen as Magneto, Channing Tatum as Gambit, Kelsey Grammer as Beast, and Alan Cumming as Nightcrawler alongside Romijn’s Mystique, all reuniting decades after their original Fox films. The film hits theaters on December 18, and with this new look now confirmed, fans finally have a clear picture of just how far Marvel is pushing these legacy characters away from their Fox roots.
