‘Avengers Doomsday’ has spent nearly two years living under one enormous shadow, and it has everything to do with a single reveal from San Diego Comic-Con. Ever since Robert Downey Jr pulled off his mask and confirmed he would return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Victor von Doom, fans have obsessed over every scrap of information about the character, right down to the smallest visual details of his new costume.

Joe and Anthony Russo, the directors steering both ‘Avengers Doomsday’ and its upcoming follow-up ‘Avengers Secret Wars’, have been fielding questions about that costume for months, often deflecting with teases rather than real answers. They have already called Downey’s Doom costume their favorite out of every Marvel film they have directed, without giving fans much insight into why.

That changed during a new conversation with Soundsphere, where the Russos finally opened up about just how involved Downey actually was in shaping his own look. Asked directly whether Downey is collaborative about what he wants in the costume, Joe Russo answered with a single word, extremely, before adding that collaborative was putting it nicely.

Anthony Russo picked up from there, explaining that Downey approaches the process less like a typical actor and more like a full filmmaker in his own right. He said their favorite collaborators are always the ones who think holistically about a project, whether they are composers, production designers or actors, and that Downey represents the extreme example of that mindset, describing him as someone who is micro detailed in how he engages with every part of the character.

That level of involvement lines up with what the Russos have said elsewhere about Downey’s process on the role. In a separate interview with Entertainment Tonight, reported by The Hollywood Reporter, Joe Russo described Downey as intensely immersed in developing the character, saying he is so dialed in that the directors were on the phone with him about backstory and costume ideas the very morning of their conversation.

The costume itself has become one of the most closely guarded secrets of the entire ‘Avengers Doomsday’ rollout, with Marvel doling out only small glimpses through merchandise and concept art rather than a full reveal. Recent promotional items from a Disney Merchandise Expo in China gave fans their clearest look yet at the design, showing a sleek metallic mask and a menacing silhouette that Joe Russo has previously compared to the aesthetic of classic Universal Movie Monsters.

Beyond the visual design, Downey has also reportedly taken an active hand in shaping Doom’s backstory, a process the Russos say reflects his desire to work with rich, three-dimensional characters rather than simply stepping into a costume. Given his decade-defining run as Tony Stark before ‘Avengers: Endgame’ closed that chapter of the MCU, the scrutiny around how Downey approaches a villain this different has only intensified as the film’s December release inches closer.

That scrutiny has only grown louder given how much mystery still surrounds the character himself. Joe Russo has repeatedly declined to explain why Downey’s Doom shares Tony Stark’s face, telling Soundsphere that the answer will only make sense once audiences actually watch the film, and adding that he does not want viewers leaning too heavily on anything from the franchise’s past as they head into the new story.

How excited are you to see Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom costume in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’?

‘Avengers Doomsday’ is scheduled to open in theaters on December 18, with ‘Avengers Secret Wars’ following the year after.
