Marvel Just Broke a Disney+ Record It’s Taken Seven Years to Set
Marvel fans have had a lot to celebrate this year, and the momentum shows no signs of slowing down. Between a record-breaking summer at the box office and a marketing blitz unlike anything the franchise has attempted before, the buzz around the Marvel Cinematic Universe has reached a fever pitch heading into the fall.
Much of that energy has centered on two projects working in tandem. ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ has dominated theaters since Sony released it in late July, while the promotional rollout for ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ has kept fans glued to their screens well ahead of its December release.
That combination has now translated into a genuine streaming milestone. Disney reports that Marvel Studios titles racked up over 420 million hours of viewing on Disney+ in August, the highest monthly total the studio has ever recorded on the platform.
The number represents a massive lift over typical viewing levels, with Doomsday anticipation alone credited for driving more than 200 million of those hours above the norm. It’s a striking reminder that hype for a movie that hasn’t even hit theaters yet can send fans flooding back into a streaming catalog to revisit everything that came before it.
The milestone was announced by Disney Senior EVP and Chief Financial Officer Hugh Johnston at the Goldman Sachs Communacopia + Technology Conference. Johnston tied the surge directly to the one-two punch of Doomsday’s marketing campaign and the runaway success of ‘Brand New Day,’ which has now crossed $2.4 billion worldwide and stands as the third-highest-grossing film of all time before adjusting for inflation.
That box office run isn’t slowing down either. This week, ‘Brand New Day’ is expected to pass ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ to become the highest-grossing film in U.S. box office history before inflation, putting it on a collision course with ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ for that same crown once the latter arrives.
Doomsday’s own promotional push has already broken records of its own. Its July trailer ranks as the second-biggest movie trailer launch ever, and it’s now Disney’s most-viewed trailer in history, a feat that helps explain why so many fans have been drawn back to older Marvel titles on Disney+.
According to Deadline, that promotional momentum extends beyond the trailer itself. Marvel’s cast-reveal livestream, which unveiled the Doomsday lineup through names printed on the backs of set chairs, pulled in 275 million digital views and 3.1 million social media mentions on its own.
There’s also a nostalgia play feeding into the numbers. ‘Avengers: Endgame: Encore,’ an extended rerelease of the 2019 blockbuster, is headed back to theaters on September 25, and its trailer earned 77 million views in its first 24 hours, more than four times larger than any rerelease trailer has ever managed.
Ticket demand for Doomsday itself is already ahead of schedule. Presales have crossed $50 million domestically a full three months before the film’s December 18 release, and audiences are gravitating toward premium formats, with over 70 percent of ticket sales going to Infinity Vision screenings.
Fans have taken notice of just how dramatically the franchise’s fortunes have shifted. After several years of mixed box office results and cooler fan reception following the original ‘Avengers: Endgame,’ the response to both ‘Brand New Day’ and the ‘Doomsday’ rollout suggests a genuine reinvigoration of interest in the MCU as a whole.
More Marvel content is also on the way to keep that momentum going. ‘VisionQuest’ is set to premiere on Disney+ on October 14, giving fans another reason to stay engaged with the platform ahead of Doomsday’s theatrical debut, with ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ already lined up to follow in December 2027.
