Marvel Just Teased a Massive Twist: Black Cat May Be Joining the X-Men

Marvel’s roster of mutants has been in flux for a while now, ever since the utopian Krakoa era came to its dramatic close and left the X-Men line searching for a new sense of direction. Between two separate ongoing X-Men titles and a mixed critical reception to recent crossover events, the mutant corner of the Marvel Universe has felt noticeably unsettled compared to its previous golden stretch.

Amid that uncertainty, one of Spider-Man’s most iconic supporting characters has been quietly building toward something unexpected in her own solo series. Felicia Hardy, better known as Black Cat, has spent recent issues of her ongoing ‘Black Cat’ comic caught up in cosmic-scale stakes tied to Marvel’s Queen in Black event, crossing paths with everyone from the Fantastic Four to the Punisher along the way.

That storyline is now taking a sharp left turn. AIPT has exclusively revealed the cover and solicitation for December’s ‘Black Cat’ #17, which appears to confirm that Felicia is becoming a mutant and joining the X-Men outright, following an earlier tease in November’s ‘Black Cat’ #16 that hinted at exactly this possibility through an encounter with Emma Frost.

The official solicitation for the issue leans hard into the reveal, describing it as Felicia’s own second genesis as the newest member of the X-Men, and framing her recent encounter with Emma Frost as the catalyst behind the transformation. The issue is written by G. Willow Wilson with art by Andrés Genolet and a cover by Gleb Melnikov, continuing the creative team behind Felicia’s ongoing solo run.

This wouldn’t be Felicia’s first brush with X-Men storylines this year, either. AIPT previously reported back in August that November’s ‘Black Cat’ #16 would feature several X-Men guest stars, including Emma Frost, kicking off a two-part arc titled “X-CON” that initially framed the mutant question as more of an open mystery than a confirmed transformation.

That earlier issue’s own solicitation played coy with the reveal, posing the question of whether Felicia is secretly a mutant without fully committing to an answer. With ‘Black Cat’ #17 dropping the “X-CON” title entirely and leaning fully into the mutant framing, it appears Marvel has moved past ambiguity and into a genuine status quo shift for the character.

The timing of this reveal hasn’t gone unnoticed by longtime readers. Felicia has never previously been established as a mutant in her decades of publication history, with her signature bad luck ability, a form of probability manipulation, traditionally tied to experimental technology and later retconned origins rather than any mutant gene.

Some fans and outlets have drawn comparisons to Ms. Marvel’s own retroactive mutant reveal in recent years, suggesting Marvel may be using a similar narrative device to fold another popular character into the X-Men’s ranks. The shift also arrives amid ongoing speculation that Peter Parker himself could eventually be revealed as a mutant within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, adding an extra layer of cross-media intrigue to the timing.

Black Cat’s transformation would also open the door for potential live-action implications down the line, given how ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ already introduced Jean Grey into that franchise’s world earlier this year. Whether Marvel Studios has any interest in mirroring this comic book twist on screen remains entirely speculative for now.

With ‘Black Cat’ #17 set for release in December, fans won’t have to wait long to see exactly how Felicia’s mutant status plays out on the page, or whether the twist ends up being a genuine permanent change rather than a temporary storytelling device. Either way, it marks one of the more surprising character shakeups Marvel has teased in recent memory.

What do you think about Black Cat potentially becoming a mutant and joining the X-Men?
