Marvel Studios Reportedly Developing ‘True Detective’-Style Special Presentation With ‘Lanterns’ Comparisons
Marvel Studios has built a reputation for using its Special Presentation format to experiment outside the constraints of its usual film and television slate. From black-and-white monster horror to a holiday romp with the Guardians of the Galaxy, these shorter projects have given the studio room to play with genre in ways its bigger releases rarely allow.
That track record is fueling fresh speculation after a new round of reports pointed to Marvel developing another entry in the format, this time with an unexpectedly grounded, crime-drama bent. Details remain scarce and unofficial, but the buzz has already started drawing comparisons to two very different corners of the streaming landscape.
According to insider Jeff Sneider, Marvel may be working on a project styled after ‘True Detective,’ something he compared directly to HBO’s upcoming ‘Lanterns’ series. Speaking on The Hot Mic podcast, Sneider said he believes the studio is developing a show centered on someone investigating crimes within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, a structure that could let characters move freely in and out of the story, according to The Hot Mic.
He added that he isn’t certain which characters or organizations might be involved, but expects an official announcement in the coming months describing the project as “something True Detective-stylish.” Sneider also floated the idea that the show could follow a procedural format, with different Marvel heroes and villains cycling through as the focus of individual cases.
Sneider’s report isn’t the only piece of chatter circulating about Marvel’s next Special Presentation. He noted that he’d also heard the project might be a spy show, and that its rumored codename could be tied to “the Ahmmed Stone” or “the Ammit Stone,” though he wasn’t certain whether those names point to one project or two separate ones entirely.
That uncertainty lines up with an earlier report from insider James Mack, who claimed Marvel Studios has two Special Presentations in active development for 2027. Mack’s version describes one project centered on a single character and another built around a team, though specific character details and release windows remain unconfirmed on both fronts.
If the crime-drama concept does move forward, one theory ties the “Ammit” codename to Moon Knight, referencing the Egyptian goddess featured prominently in the 2022 miniseries. That series has yet to receive a follow-up despite strong reviews for its writing and Oscar Isaac’s performance, making it a plausible target for expansion through the Special Presentation format.
Marvel Studios first introduced the Special Presentation label with ‘Werewolf by Night’ in 2022, a black-and-white Halloween special directed by Michael Giacchino that leaned heavily into classic monster movie aesthetics while introducing characters like Jack Russell and Elsa Bloodstone. The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special followed later that year, using its shorter runtime to deliver a festive detour ahead of ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.’
More recently, the studio applied the format to a very different tone with ‘The Punisher: One Last Kill,’ bringing Jon Bernthal back as Frank Castle following his return in ‘Daredevil: Born Again.’ That release demonstrated the format’s flexibility, proving it could support gritty, street-level storytelling just as easily as horror or holiday comedy.
Given that history, a ‘True Detective’-inspired mystery wouldn’t be a massive stretch for Marvel, even if it marks a notable tonal shift from anything the Special Presentation banner has attempted so far. It would also arrive as Marvel has scaled back its overall live-action Disney+ output, favoring fewer television projects in favor of theatrical releases.
For now, everything about this reported project, from its genre to its cast to its release plans, remains speculative and unconfirmed by Marvel Studios. Until an official announcement arrives, fans are left piecing together conflicting rumors about what shape this next Special Presentation might actually take.
