Marvel’s ‘Avengers: Endgame Encore’ Comes With a Catch, and Not Every Fan Will See the Same Movie

Marvel Studios has never been shy about milking nostalgia, and this fall the studio is leaning into it harder than usual. Seven years after ‘Avengers: Endgame‘ closed out the Infinity Saga, the film is heading back to theaters for a limited engagement dressed up as a victory lap.

‘Avengers: Endgame Encore’ officially opens September 25, with tickets already on sale and a new trailer stitching together some of the film’s biggest emotional beats. On the surface, it plays like a straightforward rerelease designed to get fans back in the seats before December’s ‘Avengers: Doomsday.’

But the fine print is where things get interesting. Every ‘Endgame Encore’ screening will include a new, exclusive look at ‘Avengers: Doomsday,’ while audiences who specifically choose IMAX or Disney’s newly created Infinity Vision-certified theaters will get an additional sneak peek not available anywhere else. That two-tier structure means the full experience genuinely depends on which screen fans book.

Infinity Vision itself is the more unusual piece of this rollout. It’s not a new projection technology so much as a certification standard, one that verifies participating theaters meet Disney’s benchmarks for screen size, laser projection brightness, and premium sound.

The timing behind introducing it now isn’t coincidental. ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ opens December 18 opposite Denis Villeneuve’s ‘Dune: Part Three,’ and IMAX has already locked its screens exclusively to Villeneuve’s film for that entire release window, leaving Marvel’s own tentpole without its usual go-to format.

That scheduling conflict appears to have pushed Disney toward building out Infinity Vision months in advance, using ‘Endgame Encore’ as a low-risk way to get audiences familiar with the new premium badge before ‘Doomsday’ actually needs it to compete. One outlet’s breakdown of the strategy noted that pairing the format’s debut with exclusive bonus footage effectively trains moviegoers to associate Infinity Vision with must-see MCU content ahead of the December release.

As for what’s actually different about this cut of ‘Endgame,’ the rerelease reportedly runs several minutes longer than the original theatrical version, padded out with new footage tied directly to ‘Doomsday’ along with a fresh introduction and a specially crafted end tag. Marvel hasn’t detailed exactly what that bonus footage shows, and the trailer released so far doesn’t tip its hand either.

Fan speculation has already filled that vacuum. Theories floating around range from a possible Doctor Doom appearance to more grounded guesses, like an expanded version of Tony Stark’s funeral scene or a new sequence involving Loki during his time working with the Time Variance Authority.

The rerelease also isn’t just about setting up ‘Doomsday’ narratively. ‘Endgame’ briefly held the title of highest-grossing film ever with a worldwide haul north of $2.7 billion before ‘Avatar’ reclaimed the crown, and pushing more tickets through ‘Encore’ gives Marvel a chance to chip away at that gap, even if only symbolically.

Merchandising has followed suit, with new posters branded for both 4DX and Infinity Vision screenings, plus a pair of popcorn buckets shaped like Iron Man’s helmet and the Nano Gauntlet from the film’s climax. It’s the kind of full-court marketing press Marvel typically reserves for a brand-new release rather than a seven-year-old film.

For fans who just want to relive ‘Endgame’ one more time before ‘Doomsday’ hits, the standard rerelease will still deliver an exclusive first look at what’s coming. But for anyone chasing every scrap of new footage, the theater you pick this September may matter more than it ever has for a Marvel rerelease.
