Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans Reunite for a New ‘Avengers: Endgame Encore IMAX Promo
Marvel’s marketing machine has spent the past few weeks building serious momentum around bringing ‘Avengers: Endgame‘ back to theaters, and the campaign has increasingly leaned into a mix of nostalgia and genuine star power to sell the moment. Rather than simply relying on trailers and posters, the studio has started rolling out promotional content featuring the film’s original cast members directly addressing audiences.
That approach continued this week with a new IMAX-produced promo featuring Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans sitting together in a theater, promoting the upcoming rerelease of ‘Avengers: Endgame’ under its new title. The clip leans into the easy chemistry between the two actors, who have spent over a decade working together across multiple Marvel films as Tony Stark and Steve Rogers.
‘Avengers: Endgame Encore’ hits theaters September 25, bringing Anthony and Joe Russo’s 2019 blockbuster back to the big screen with a retooled presentation built specifically around IMAX and Disney’s newly introduced Infinity Vision format. According to CBR, the rerelease clocks in at 185 minutes, four minutes longer than the original 181-minute theatrical cut, with that additional footage reportedly tied to bridging the story into December’s ‘Avengers: Doomsday.’
That connective tissue matters given who’s actually driving the hype this time around. Downey Jr., whose Tony Stark died defeating Thanos at the end of ‘Endgame,’ is returning to the MCU in ‘Doomsday’ as Doctor Doom, working once again with the Russo brothers, who’ve been notably tight-lipped about what exactly his return entails, previously describing Doom as a “brand-new character that you can’t even guess at.”
The new promo footage fits into a broader rollout that’s included everything from popcorn buckets shaped like Iron Man’s helmet and the Nano-Gauntlet to newly unveiled posters branded for both 4DX and Infinity Vision screenings. According to Marvel Studios’ official description, the Encore presentation includes an exclusive look at ‘Avengers: Doomsday,’ with IMAX and Infinity Vision-certified screens offering viewers an additional sneak peek not available in standard theatrical formats.
Infinity Vision itself represents a new certification standard Marvel introduced specifically because IMAX committed its screens exclusively to Denis Villeneuve’s ‘Dune: Part Three’ for the same December 18 release window as ‘Doomsday.’ Using ‘Endgame Encore’ to familiarize audiences with the new format months ahead of time gives Disney a low-risk way to build recognition before ‘Doomsday’ actually needs that premium screen infrastructure to compete.
The original ‘Endgame’ briefly held the title of highest-grossing movie of all time with a $2.799 billion worldwide haul before ‘Avatar’ reclaimed the top spot during a pandemic-era rerelease of its own. Early projections floated by Hollywood Life suggest ‘Endgame Encore’ could theoretically help push the film’s lifetime total past ‘Avatar’s’ current $2.923 billion global gross, though that would require pulling in a significant chunk of new box office from audiences who could otherwise simply stream the film at home.
With Downey Jr. and Evans fronting the promotional push together, the campaign leans hard into the emotional weight of watching two of the MCU’s most iconic original Avengers share the screen again, even in a brief promotional clip rather than new film footage. Given how much anticipation is already building around Downey Jr.’s mysterious return as Doctor Doom, pairing him with Evans for this kind of nostalgic promo feels like a calculated way to remind audiences exactly what’s at stake heading into December.
