Marvel’s Mutant Era Reportedly Gets Bigger With Both ‘X-Force’ and ‘Alpha Flight’ Movies in the Works

The X-Men’s arrival in the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been one of the biggest open questions in superhero fandom. Marvel Studios is already developing an ‘X-Men’ reboot with Jake Schreier directing, while Sonny Lee Sung Jin and Joanna Calo are working on a new draft of Michael Lesslie’s script.

Before any of that reaches theaters, the studio has to get through ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ on December 18 and ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ on December 17, 2027. Kevin Feige has framed that second film as a turning point, and the mutants are expected to take center stage once it is over.

Now a new report claims that Marvel is building out that mutant slate well beyond the main team. According to the latest rumor, ‘X-Force’ and ‘Alpha Flight’ films are both in the works at Marvel Studios, which would mean two separate team-ups tied to the same corner of the comics.

Marvel has not confirmed either project, and no release windows, directors or cast members have been attached. Both movies remain rumors for now, although they fit a pattern of reports that have been building all year. Outlets covering the story have also stressed that the ‘X-Force’ claim should be treated cautiously, especially with the separate ‘X-Men’ reboot already underway.

The ‘X-Force’ side of the story is not entirely new. Back in January, a report claimed that Marvel Studios was moving forward with an ‘X-Force’ movie set after ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’.

‘Alpha Flight’ entered the conversation in April, when a rumor claimed that a project built around the Canadian team was in development at the studio. The report did not say whether it would be a movie, a series or a special presentation. More recently, another rumor claimed that Ryan Reynolds is writing the project and that it could end up as a standalone film or become a new Deadpool movie.

Reynolds has helped fuel the speculation. After ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ grossed $1.338 billion worldwide, he talked about developing an ensemble project in which Wade Wilson would play a supporting role rather than lead the story.

Many fans assumed that project would be ‘X-Force’, since the team is closely tied to Deadpool, Wolverine and Cable. The ‘Alpha Flight’ rumor suggests it could be something very different, and the claim that Reynolds is spearheading it has not been verified.

Alpha Flight is Marvel’s Canadian superhero team, created by John Byrne. The group first appeared in ‘Uncanny X-Men’ #120 in 1979 and later received its own comic series in 1983.

The original lineup included Guardian, Sasquatch, Shaman, Northstar, Aurora and Snowbird, and the team has a direct link to Wolverine, since its members were first sent to bring Logan back to Canada. The heroes have never received a live-action adaptation, which makes the possibility of a movie particularly intriguing. Almost all of them are mutants, so the team would slot neatly into a post-‘Secret Wars’ mutant push.

Feige has been careful about how he describes the changes coming to the MCU. In a press conversation reported by Variety, Marvel’s chief said that “Reboot is a scary word,” and he described ‘Secret Wars’ as more of a reset that sets the studio up for the future.

That same conversation confirmed that the X-Men will be recast after ‘Secret Wars’. If ‘X-Force’ and ‘Alpha Flight’ are real, they would be part of the same new chapter, built around the Mutant Saga rather than the stories that came before it.

For now, the safest approach is to treat both films as unconfirmed. Marvel has a lot on its plate with ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ arriving soon, and the studio is unlikely to reveal its next phase of plans until its major fan events in 2027.

Still, the idea of a mutant universe with multiple teams has obvious appeal. X-Force would bring a darker, more violent tone, while Alpha Flight would introduce an entirely different corner of Marvel lore with a distinctly Canadian flavor.
