Marvel’s New ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Blurb Shows Why Captain America Has the Hardest Job in the MCU
Every Avengers movie has a leader at its center, and for years that meant Steve Rogers. The shield has changed hands since then, and Sam Wilson now carries the weight that comes with it. As ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ approaches, the picture of Captain America as a team captain is getting clearer.
Wilson’s path to the top has been a gradual one. He took up the mantle in ‘Captain America: Brave New World’, which ended with him recruiting Joaquin Torres, the Falcon, as the first member of a rebuilt Avengers. ‘Thunderbolts*’ then added a wrinkle, since its post-credits scene made the Thunderbolts the New Avengers while Sam was assembling his own official team.
Now a new description of Captain America in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ spells out where the character stands. It says Sam was given the task of assembling a new team of Avengers not long after taking over the mantle. With his own Earth and 2 others now in peril, he has to rely on his sharply honed diplomacy to lead the most disparate group of heroes he has ever faced.
New description for Captain America in ‘AVENGERS: DOOMSDAY’: “It wasn’t long after assuming the mantle of Captain America that Sam Wilson was tasked with assembling a new team of Avengers. Now, with not only his Earth but two others in peril, he must put his sharply-honed diplomacy to work in leading the most disparate group of heroes he’s ever encountered. Uniting old partners and new allies takes confidence, empathy, and a good plan — all of which Sam knows he needs to employ if they are to survive the greatest danger Earth has faced yet.”

The blurb leans heavily on soft skills. It says that uniting old partners and new allies takes confidence, empathy and a good plan, all of which Sam knows he needs if the team is going to survive what it calls the greatest danger Earth has faced yet. That is a notable choice of words for a superhero movie, because it frames the job as persuasion rather than a punch-up.
That fits what the people behind the character have been saying for a while. ‘Captain America: Brave New World’ producer Nate Moore has said there has never been an Avengers movie without a Captain America at the center, and that Sam’s journey in his solo film leads directly into ‘Avengers: Doomsday’. Anthony Mackie told SYFY Wire that the new movie takes place just a few months after ‘Brave New World’.
The word disparate is doing a lot of work, because the cast is enormous. Marvel has described the film as following heroes from 3 distinct universes on a deadly collision course. The first trailer, released in July, featured Thor, Captain America, Shang-Chi, Yelena Belova, the Thunderbolts, Namor, the Black Panthers, Gambit, the Fantastic Four and Magneto.
Sam also has to share the spotlight with the original. Chris Evans is returning as Steve Rogers, a reveal that came with a teaser showing him carrying an infant, and a synopsis shown at the Shanghai Expo lists both Steve Rogers and Sam Wilson among the assembled heroes. The film brings Robert Downey Jr. back as Doctor Doom, which is a pretty good reason for heroes of all stripes to put their differences aside.
Mackie has said he believes ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ will bring back the old Marvel feeling audiences used to get. That promise carries real weight given the mixed reaction to parts of the franchise’s recent run, including Sam’s own solo film. A story built around Sam as a coalition builder gives the character something he did not quite get to do in ‘Brave New World’.
Marvel has not officially detailed the full makeup of his team. A reveal of the cast at a Disney event in Italy included a breakdown listing the Fantastic Four, X-Men, Wakandans, New Avengers and Sam’s own official Avengers. Rumors from industry scoopers have named Captain Marvel, Hulk, Wong and Shang-Chi as members, though none of that has been confirmed.
The balance between the Avengers factions may be the most interesting part of the story. The Thunderbolts’ New Avengers and Sam’s group were set up as rivals over the name, and a threat as big as Doom could force them to work together. That is exactly the kind of diplomacy challenge the new description suggests.

‘Avengers: Doomsday’ is directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, who return after ‘Avengers: Endgame’. It is written by Michael Waldron and Stephen McFeely and arrives in theaters on December 18. It will be followed by ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ on December 17, 2027, which means Sam’s leadership is about to be tested on the biggest stage the franchise has ever built.
Do you think Sam Wilson has what it takes to lead the Avengers in Avengers: Doomsday?
