Marvel’s New ‘X-Men’ Star, Maya Boyd, Just Bought Every Storm Comic She Could Find

Casting an X-Men reboot always comes with impossible expectations, especially for characters fans have spent decades imagining as their perfect versions. Few roles have carried that weight quite like Storm, the weather-controlling mutant whose comic book identity has long felt at odds with how Hollywood has portrayed her on screen.

That tension traces back to Halle Berry’s original run as Storm across four films between 2000 and 2014, followed by Alexandra Shipp taking over the younger version of the character in ‘X-Men: Apocalypse’ and ‘Dark Phoenix’. Neither portrayal fully matched Ororo Munroe as she’s depicted in the comics, a Kenyan-born mutant with white hair and dark skin, a gap fans have pointed to for years while pushing for a more comic-accurate casting choice.

Marvel finally answered that call at D23, revealing 23-year-old Broadway performer Maya Boyd as the new Storm in the studio’s upcoming ‘X-Men‘ reboot. Since then, Boyd has been quietly settling into her new role away from the cameras, and a new Instagram story is giving fans a glimpse of just how seriously she’s taking the homework.

The story shows Boyd holding up a stack of Storm comic issues, captioned simply “bought every one.” It’s a small, unscripted moment, but one that speaks to how deliberately she appears to be studying the character’s history rather than relying solely on prior film portrayals to shape her performance.

Storm’s comic book legacy gives Boyd plenty of material to work through beyond the character’s signature weather manipulation. Born to a tribal princess and an American photojournalist, Ororo Munroe has served as an Avenger, a member of the Fantastic Four, and the acknowledged leader of the X-Men during the 1980s, while also becoming the first Black leader of any Marvel superhero team.

That depth explains why fans reacted so strongly to the casting news in the first place, treating Boyd’s selection as a direct answer to years of campaigning for a more faithful adaptation. Marvel opted to cast for the character rather than lean on an established star, a decision that echoes Fox’s own gamble on an unknown Hugh Jackman as Wolverine back in 2000.

Boyd’s casting arrives alongside a broader wave of new X-Men reveals from Marvel Studios, with Samara Weaving joining as Emma Frost, Inde Navarrette as Rogue, and Adam Driver playing the villainous Mister Sinister. The film marks Boyd’s feature debut, and her Instagram following reportedly jumped to nearly 100,000 accounts within hours of the announcement going public.

Marvel has kept its promotional rollout relatively quiet since the initial D23 reveal, with Boyd herself yet to give a full interview about what drew her to the role or how she’s preparing to bring Storm to life. Moments like this comic-buying spree offer fans a rare, organic look at her process in the meantime, well ahead of the film’s confirmed release date of May 5, 2028.

With years of fan anticipation now riding on her shoulders, Boyd’s approach so far suggests she understands exactly what’s at stake in getting this version of Storm right.
