Marvel’s ‘X-Men’ Just Cast Its Rogue, and ‘Obsession’ Star Inde Navarrette’s Casting Comes with a Twist Nobody Saw Coming

Marvel’s mutant reboot has been the industry’s worst-kept open secret for months, with casting rumors swirling ever since Kevin Feige’s team began quietly meeting with actors this summer. Every name that surfaced only added more fuel to a fire that’s been building since Disney first acquired the X-Men rights back in 2019.

That anticipation reached a fever pitch heading into this year’s D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event, where Marvel Studios finally promised to pull back the curtain on its new team of mutants. Among the night’s biggest reveals was the official confirmation that ‘Obsession’ breakout Inde Navarrette has been cast as Rogue in Marvel’s upcoming ‘X-Men‘ reboot, directed by Jake Schreier and set for a May 5, 2028 theatrical release. It’s a role previously made iconic by Anna Paquin across four films in Fox’s original ‘X-Men’ franchise, putting real weight behind Navarrette’s casting.

The announcement carries an extra layer of intrigue for anyone who’s been tracking Navarrette’s own comments about the franchise. In the weeks leading up to D23, she had openly discussed her interest in playing a very different mutant altogether.

Speaking with Variety ahead of the reveal, Navarrette confirmed she had met with director Jake Schreier and made no secret of her enthusiasm for his work on ‘Thunderbolts*’. She’d previously expressed hope to land the role of Mystique, the shapeshifting mutant famously portrayed by Rebecca Romijn and Jennifer Lawrence in earlier films, making her ultimate casting as Rogue something of a surprise twist for longtime followers of the rumor mill.

Adam Driver capped things off with a video message revealing his role as the villainous Mister Sinister, going by the alias Nathaniel Milbury. “Kevin and I have been talking for years about me joining the MCU,” Driver said during the D23 announcement, adding that they’d finally landed on a character he felt deeply connected to.

Reaction across social media has been enthusiastic, with fans praising the youthful, ensemble-driven direction Marvel appears to be taking with characters like Rogue, Jean Grey, and Cyclops all cast with rising stars rather than established names. It’s a notable departure from Fox’s earlier films, suggesting Schreier and Feige are aiming for a “First Class”-style dynamic among the younger mutants.
