Mary J. Blige shared a story about a tough moment early in her career that really shook her. On the R&B Money podcast, the Queen of Hip-Hop Soul talked about meeting one of her idols, only to be met with harsh criticism that left her feeling crushed.

Mary, who became famous in 1992 with her debut album What’s the 411?, said the encounter was painful. The pop star she admired gave her advice that felt unnecessary and cruel.

“And this person goes, ‘You really should dye your hair and your roots the same colour as your hair. And you really should learn to sing on key,’” Mary told the podcast host, Tank. She said the comments left her stunned and doubting herself, especially since she was still young and trying to find her place in music.

She didn’t reveal who made the comments, but fans have guessed for years that it might have been Chaka Khan. The funk legend has previously talked about Mary’s 1992 cover of her song Sweet Thing, saying that Mary’s vocals sounded flat when she first heard it. Chaka even joked about asking Mary what time of day she recorded the song.

Despite that rocky start, Mary and Chaka eventually built a good relationship and worked together on music later. Chaka said they reached a point where they could be honest with each other, and the early criticism became a kind of tough love.

Even though that memory still stings for Mary, she’s moved on and continues to shine. She released her new single More Than a Lover in February, which fans have loved for its soulful and soft sound. This follows her 2024 album Gratitude and sets the stage for her next big projects.

Mary is also getting ready for her first Las Vegas residency, called My Life, My Story, starting in May at Dolby Live at Park MGM. The shows will take fans through her amazing career, mixing hits from the past with her newest music.

On top of music, Mary is staying busy in movies and TV. She recently signed a new three-picture deal with Lifetime. The first film under this deal, Mary J. Blige Presents: Be Happy, came out on February 7 and marked the directorial debut of Gabourey Sidibe.

With her wine brand, Sun Goddess, along with music and movies, Mary J. Blige continues to prove she’s a strong and creative force in entertainment. She’s taken hard moments and turned them into a career that lasts decades, keeping her an unmatched voice in R&B.
