‘Masters of the Universe’ Star Idris Elba on James Bond Talk: “Never Legit” and Why Fans Might Not Accept a Black 007
Idris Elba has addressed long-running rumors about him potentially becoming James Bond, saying the speculation was never realistic in the first place. The comments come from a new cover interview with British GQ, where the actor spoke openly about the franchise, casting discussions, and the future of the iconic role. The information is based on Elba’s interview published by British GQ.
Elba, 53, has been linked to the role of James Bond for years, especially during the final stretch of Daniel Craig’s time as 007. Fans often suggested he would be a strong candidate to take over the famous spy character, but Elba made it clear that things were never actually moving in that direction.
He said the rumors were never grounded in real plans from the studio or the filmmakers. He also explained that while he appreciated the attention and praise that came with the speculation, he never believed it was a serious possibility.
Elba said, “I’ve always felt that it’s not a realistic thing. James Bond was written how he was written for a reason. But I was complimented by it.”
He also spoke about how global audiences might react to a major change in the character’s identity. In his view, the Bond franchise has a very specific tradition and audience expectation that makes some casting ideas difficult to imagine in practice.
Elba added, “In realistic terms, some markets just don’t go for that. Bond is big all over the world. And audiences won’t all go for a Black male, an African male, playing Bond. That’s not what they like in their culture. Period.”
The actor also commented on the nature of the Bond character itself. He suggested that the franchise should remain consistent with its established identity rather than trying to reshape it too heavily for modern expectations.
He said, “Bond is so unrealistic, so a hint of reality is good, but let’s not try and make it woke. I think you’ve got to be pure to what it is: escapism. Don’t try and answer the world’s taste. Just be Bond.”
Elba’s remarks come at a time when the James Bond franchise is entering a new phase. Casting discussions for the next 007 film are already underway after Amazon MGM Studios gained creative control of the series. According to industry reporting, casting director Nina Gold is involved in the search process, and director Denis Villeneuve is attached to the upcoming film.
There has been increasing speculation about who might take on the role next. Younger British actors are reportedly being considered, with names like Tom Francis, Jacob Elordi, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and Callum Turner all appearing in industry conversations.
Despite his long association with the rumors, Elba’s latest comments suggest he is not part of the current casting process and never was. Instead, he sees the role as something that was always out of reach, even during the height of fan speculation.
For now, the search for the next James Bond continues, while Elba moves forward with other major projects, including his role in Masters of the Universe.
