Maya Boyd Shares New Photos, and ‘X-Men’ Fans Can’t Stop Thinking About Storm
Few casting announcements in recent memory have turned a social media feed into a full-time fan event the way Marvel’s ‘X-Men’ reboot has. Every time one of the new mutants posts something, comic book fans go looking for clues about the movie to come.
That is especially true for the actress who inherits one of the franchise’s most beloved heroes. Since Marvel revealed her as Ororo Munroe, also known as Storm, Maya Boyd has become one of the most closely watched new faces in superhero casting.
Her latest Instagram upload has kept that attention going. The newly shared photos show Boyd with voluminous natural curls, posed against a warm wooden door in a brown strapless top, alongside a close-up shot with a soft, over-the-shoulder glance.

The reaction follows a pattern that has built since her casting. When she posted an earlier carousel in a beige-yellow dress, fans filled the comments with thunderstorm and lightning bolt emojis, treating each new post as a preview of her performance.
Another set of photos, showing Boyd in a sheer black dress with an embellished bust and layered necklaces, drew similar buzz. One fan went viral by placing her photo beside a comic book illustration of Storm, arguing the 2 looked like the same person.
Boyd has also leaned into the role herself. She updated her Instagram bio with 3 lightning bolt emojis just hours after the announcement, and she has shared a Story of herself holding an armful of Storm comics as part of her preparation.
Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige unveiled Boyd as Storm at D23 in Anaheim on Friday, August 14, 2026. The role was previously played by Halle Berry in 4 films between 2000 and 2014, and by Alexandra Shipp as a younger version of the character in ‘X-Men: Apocalypse’ and ‘X-Men: Dark Phoenix.’
It is Boyd’s first movie. The 23-year-old graduated from the University of Michigan and made her Broadway debut in ‘Merrily We Roll Along’ in September 2023 while she was still a senior. She later played the title role in ‘& Juliet’ and recently starred opposite Taraji P. Henson in ‘Joe Turner’s Come and Gone.’
She has a following beyond the stage too. The Root reports she has been a prominent TikTok creator since 2021, with more than 450,000 followers drawn to her skits, family videos and singing clips.
Her Instagram audience grew quickly after the announcement, reportedly jumping to nearly 100,000 followers within hours. Boyd also thanked fans in a post of her own, writing that it was an honor to be their Storm.
‘X-Men’ is set to open on May 5, 2028, and Jake Schreier, who directed ‘Thunderbolts*,’ is leading the film. Lee Sung Jin, creator of ‘Beef,’ and Joanna Calo, co-creator of ‘The Bear,’ were hired to write the script.
Boyd joins a cast that includes Sadie Sink as Jean Grey, Kit Connor as Scott Summers, Christopher Abbott as Professor X and Samara Weaving as Emma Frost. Inde Navarrette plays Rogue, and Adam Driver is the villain.
Geeks of Color pointed out that because Boyd arrives without a previous film role, she will not be measured against anyone else’s version of Storm. For a character fans have waited years to see done right, that clean slate may be part of the appeal.
The reaction to each new photo shows how much anticipation is already riding on Boyd’s performance, with filming still ahead. Fans have called for an actress who reflects Storm’s look in the comics, and many feel she fits what they imagined.
With roughly 19 months until the film arrives, expect more Instagram posts, more lightning bolt emojis and more comparisons to the comic pages.
