Mel Brooks Unveils Hilarious Official Title for Long-Awaited ‘Spaceballs’ Sequel at CinemaCon
CinemaCon in Las Vegas brought a major update for fans of the classic sci-fi comedy “Spaceballs,” as Mel Brooks revealed the official title of the long-awaited sequel.
According to information shared during the CinemaCon presentation, Brooks appeared in a video message to announce that the new film will be called “Spaceballs: The New One.” He also joked that the title is not “Spaceballs 2: The Search for More Money,” keeping the humor in line with the original 1987 film.
The sequel continues the story of Brooks’ popular parody of “Star Wars,” which he originally directed and co-wrote. Several actors from the first movie are returning, including Rick Moranis, Bill Pullman, Daphne Zuniga, George Wyner, and Mel Brooks himself.

The cast will also include new additions. Lewis Pullman, who has appeared in films like “Top Gun: Maverick” and “Thunderbolts,” joins the project along with Josh Gad, Keke Palmer, and Anthony Carrigan. While their exact roles have not been revealed, it has been confirmed that Lewis Pullman will play the son of Bill Pullman’s character, continuing the storyline connected to Lone Starr.
During the CinemaCon event, early footage from the sequel was also shown to attendees. The preview was described as intentionally chaotic and comedic, with a narrator saying the clips were not meant to fully make sense on their own. One scene reportedly included a humorous moment involving a character resembling an “Avatar” Na’vi in a restroom, where Rick Moranis’ character reacts with his signature deadpan style.
The film is directed by Josh Greenbaum. The script is written by Josh Gad, Benji Samit, and Dan Hernandez. Production is being handled by Mel Brooks, Gad, Greenbaum, Ron Howard, Brian Grazer, and Jeb Brody. The release date is set for April 23, 2027, with Amazon MGM Studios distributing the film.
Josh Gad previously spoke about the project in 2024, saying he believed the script could be one of the funniest things he has ever worked on. He also praised his writing partners and expressed excitement about the project coming together.
Overall, this sequel is shaping up to be a major return for one of comedy’s most well-known parody franchises. The mix of returning stars and new cast members has already created strong interest among fans.
It will be interesting to see if the new “Spaceballs” can capture the same charm and humor that made the original a cult favorite. What do you think about this sequel and the new title? Share your thoughts in the comments.
