Michael is a biographical film about the life of pop icon Michael Jackson. It follows his early years, starting from his time with the Jackson 5 in the 1960s and continuing through to the Bad World Tour in the late 1980s. The film shows both his rise in music and the pressure that came with global fame.
The role of Michael Jackson is played by his nephew, Jaafar Jackson, who makes his acting debut in this film. The younger version of Michael is played by Juliano Valdi. The cast also includes Nia Long, KeiLyn Durrel Jones, Laura Harrier, Jessica Sula, Mike Myers, Miles Teller, and Colman Domingo.
The project began development back in 2019 when producer Graham King secured the rights to make a film about Jackson’s life. The screenplay was written by John Logan. Later, Lionsgate officially announced the project in 2022. Antoine Fuqua came on board as director in 2023, and casting continued through 2024.

Filming was delayed because of the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike, but production eventually took place between January and May 2024. The film also went through changes during post-production after legal considerations led to adjustments in the script and structure. Reshoots were done in 2025, which increased the overall production cost.
Michael premiered in April 2026 in Berlin before rolling out internationally. It was released in the UK by Universal Pictures and in the United States by Lionsgate. The film has performed strongly at the box office, earning around $850 million worldwide, making it one of the biggest biographical films ever released.
Despite its commercial success, the film received mixed reactions from critics. Many praised Jaafar Jackson’s performance, but some said the story felt too safe and polished. Even so, a sequel is already being discussed.
With the digital and physical release now confirmed, audiences who missed it in theaters will soon be able to watch Michael at home and decide for themselves how the story works on screen.
