‘Michael’ Just Crossed The $1 Billion Mark, Cementing Jaafar Jackson’s Biopic As Music’s Biggest Box Office Champion Ever
The summer of 2026 has belonged to one film more than almost any other, and the Michael Jackson biopic ‘Michael’ has spent weeks proving that the King of Pop’s pull at the box office is as strong now as it ever was. Directed by Antoine Fuqua and led by Jaafar Jackson, the nephew of the late superstar, the film has quietly climbed the global charts since its April 24 release.
Along the way, ‘Michael’ has racked up an impressive list of records, from the biggest opening weekend ever for a musical biopic to surpassing ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ in dozens of international markets. With a reported production budget close to 200 million dollars, the stakes for the film were enormous, and audiences have responded with sustained enthusiasm rather than a quick fade.
Now the film has reached its biggest milestone yet. According to a widely shared box office breakdown, ‘Michael’ brought in another 17.1 million dollars overseas during its eighth weekend, a drop of just 10.5 percent thanks largely to its long awaited debut in Japan. That brings its international total to 569.4 million dollars across 85 markets, and combined with its 362.8 million dollar domestic haul, the film has now crossed the 1 billion dollar mark globally, making it the only music biopic in history to reach that figure.
The Japanese release proved to be the final piece of the puzzle. Michael collected 2.3 million dollars at the Japan box office on its opening Friday, including the previous week’s 653,000 dollars from limited previews, marking a record opening day for biopics in the region and the second biggest Hollywood opening day of the year. By comparison, the film’s debut more than doubled Bohemian Rhapsody’s opening day gross in Japan.
The buzz leading into the Japanese release was already building for weeks. Distributor Kino Films had launched an elaborate promotional push dubbed the MICHAEL Tokyo Takeover, transforming parts of the city to mark the occasion. The campaign included a towering outdoor display at TOHO Cinemas Ikebukuro and a massive building wall display at Shinjuku Wald 9, along with a complete MICHAEL themed makeover of the famous Clappers Diner inside Grand Cinema Sunshine Ikebukuro.
For comparison, ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’, the Freddie Mercury biopic that previously held the music biopic crown, finished its run with around 911 million dollars worldwide. ‘Michael’ had already topped that figure even before its full Japanese box office weekend was counted, and the strong Tokyo debut only widened the gap further. The film’s box office strength is especially notable given that ‘Oppenheimer’, Christopher Nolan’s awards juggernaut, finished with 891 million dollars worldwide at a similar point in its run, a number ‘Michael’ has now comfortably surpassed.

Beyond the numbers, ‘Michael’ has reignited cultural interest in Jackson’s music catalog. In the weeks following the film’s release, listeners returned in large numbers to classics like Thriller and Off the Wall, with streaming numbers for both his solo work and his recordings with the Jackson 5 seeing significant increases and introducing his music to a new generation of fans.
The film’s success has also made history in another way. Its worldwide haul has made it the highest grossing film with an all Black principal cast outside of the Marvel universe, trailing only Black Panther’s 1.38 billion dollar total and surpassing Black Panther Wakanda Forever’s 858 million dollars.
With Japan continuing to perform strongly into its opening weekend and other international markets like Russia still contributing to the total, industry watchers now believe ‘Michael’ has a real shot at climbing toward 1.05 billion dollars before its theatrical run winds down. For a film that faced years of delays, reshoots, and skepticism from some corners of the Jackson family, crossing the billion dollar threshold represents a remarkable vindication.
As ‘Michael’ continues its victory lap through international theaters, the conversation now shifts to just how high its final total could climb, and whether any other 2026 release beyond ‘The Super Mario Galaxy Movie’ can challenge it for the year’s box office crown. What do you think pushed ‘Michael’ over the billion dollar mark, and where do you see its final total landing? Share your thoughts in the comments.
