Michaela Coel is taking on a new challenge, and it has people across the film world paying attention. The creator and actor are teaming up again with A24 to bring a new version of Bloodsport to life. This time, she will both write and direct the project.

This will be Coel’s third collaboration with the studio, continuing a partnership that has already produced strong results. Her involvement alone has sparked curiosity, especially because she is known for telling bold and personal stories.

The original Bloodsport came out in 1988 and helped turn Jean-Claude Van Damme into a global action star. The film follows a soldier who enters a secret and dangerous fighting tournament known as the Kumite. It became a fan favorite thanks to its intense fight scenes and classic 1980s style.

Coel, however, seems interested in going deeper than just action. She shared her thoughts on what draws her to this world of fighters. “I have long been in awe of fighters, and astounded by the discipline, intensity, and isolation the sport demands of them,” she said.

Her focus appears to be on the mental and emotional side of fighting, not just the physical side. She also made it clear she is excited to work with A24 again. “I am excited to explore this world, especially so with A24 as my collaborators. LET’S FCKING GO,” she added.

The project will be produced by Marc Toberoff and Alberto Lensi, with Stuart Manashil and Peggy DiSalle serving as executive producers. A24 will handle both funding and worldwide distribution. Toberoff, who has worked with the Bloodsport property before, spoke about the impact of the original film.

“In 1988, the now-iconic Bloodsport introduced audiences to the gritty aesthetic of mixed martial arts, and I look forward to bringing back that high-energy tournament format to the big screen again,” he said.

Over the years, there have been a few attempts to revive the franchise, but none have made it to the finish line. This new version feels different, mainly because of Coel’s unique voice and creative style.

Right now, Coel is also busy working on another major project called First Day on Earth, which is being made with A24, HBO, and the BBC. She is heavily involved, taking on roles as writer, producer, co-director, and lead actor.

Fans will also see her soon in the film Mother Mary alongside Anne Hathaway, and she is set to appear in The Christophers with Ian McKellen. Her career continues to grow, building on the success of her acclaimed series I May Destroy You and her role in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.
